When I was young, the State colleges available to me did not cost an arm and a leg, and one could go with a little help from your parents and do so without being over burdened with high debt for the rest of ones life, as it is now...

All that's happening to you is that you are now becoming just another average citizen, uncomfortable as that may be for you.

According to what Fed50 wrote, I'd say he/she has been and will most likely continue being an average citizen. What would be "uncomfortable" is the fact that an increasing number of fellow citizens are willing to label and demonize any other citizen they do not agree with, pushing their opinions to the point of violence committed against those with whom they disagree. The voice of the average citizen is being gagged by the threat of thugs and bullies.
