Alan Dershowitz in Newsweek: “If AT&T and DirecTV can get away with silencing NEWSMAX, who will be next?”

Direct TV wanted money. Newsmax was unwilling to pay it. So they got booted.

EDIT - OK, I'll amend mine as well. Newsmax was looking for cash that DTV wasn't willing to part with.

"On multiple occasions, we made it clear to Newsmax that we wanted to continue to offer the network, but ultimately Newsmax’s demands for rate increases would have led to significantly higher costs that we would have to pass on to our broad customer base,” DirecTV said in a statement to The Hill this week. “Anyone, including our customers, can watch the network for free via NewsmaxTV.com, YouTube.com and on multiple streaming platforms like Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Google Play. We continually evaluate the most relevant programming to provide our customers and expect to fill this available channel with new content.”

Actually Newmax wanted money, in the form of fees, and Direct TV/ATT was unwilling to pay them for the privilege of carrying their BS
No matter, as most should know, freedom of speech has nothing to do with any inherent right to force a private company to pay you carry your BS.

From the OP link:

Newsmax says that when it was up for renewal with AT&T/DirecTV last month, DirecTV's position was, and continues to be, that Newsmax is not eligible for any license fees. Meanwhile, all U.S. cable news channels get fees, and nearly all top cable channels do as well. Newsmax asserts that DirecTV's demand it take zero fees would impact all its other cable broadcaster agreements, essentially demonetizing and censoring the network.

You have to pay the bills...and Newsmax is not making enough money to do so? I guess that they just want to keep all the bucks themselves?

Direct TV was willing to carry it for free. Newsmax wanted paid for it and Direct TV didn't want to pay for it. Dershowitz is arguing it is a violation of free speech for a company to decide to not take on the additional costs.

Yeah..I edited my post after research, ya got it right~

AT&T and Directv can cancel Newsmax, and people can cancel Directv.

Let the free market speak.
Totally agree....let's see million's of households cancel their cable...over Newsmax whining about not getting paid~

Question..if no one cancels Direct TV--what exactly do you think THAT message is?

Telll me, given that Direct TV offered to carry Newsmax for free...just what Freedom of Speech issue do you see here?

Dershowitz should know better
He has become such a RW shill

Networks can show any content they choose. They are a private business. The First Amendment only apples to Government censorship

There have been significant cancellations of Directv after they dropped Newsmax. If it hurts them enough in the wallet, maybe they will pick Newsmax back up.

If not, they will not.

Anyone can watch Newsmax on Youtube, 24/7.

Here it is. No one needs DIRECTV to watch Newsmax. Anyone who can pull up YOUTUBE can watch NEWSMAX.

Link showing 'significant cancellations'?

Yes, anyone can watch Newsmax whenever they want...thus negating the whole argument that...somehow..DirectTV is mandated to carry them. Also destroys the free speech argument..thanks.

DirecTV continues to push back against claims from conservatives that it is actively “censoring” right-wing content by “de-platforming” Newsmax, this time telling a group of Republican senators that it’s actually the pro-Trump channel that “dropped” the pay-TV provider.
Over the past few weeks, Newsmax has accused DirecTV, and its corporate parents AT&T and TPG Capital, of engaging in “political discrimination and censorship” by dropping the channel after negotiations over a new deal fell apart last month. DirecTV, on the other hand, has insisted that this is merely a standard business dispute, noting that it balked at Newsmax’s demands for increased license fees to remain on its channel lineup.

They can speak all they want and no one is stopping them.
lol. that's your best joke ever ironically

AT&T lost $10 billion in market cap after they cancelled Newsmax while the market was rising.

They can do what they want. There should not be any laws dictating what Directv carries…just as HULU, FUBO, or any cable company should be able to drop MSNBC OR CNN if they want to.

If the market applies enough pressure, those channels might return.

No cable company should be forced to carry any programming, other than government information in a civil emergency.

They should not have to carry ESPN, HALLMARK CHANNEL, OWN...anything.

If people do not like the channel selection, they have alternatives.

The Right Wings version of Cancel Culture.

Which government agency should be in charge of those network decisions? Do you want the courts to require DTV to show newsmax?
