This movie tried hard to be awesome, but couldn't get there.
Casey Affleck, Ben Foster and Rooney Mara carry this movie. Their ability to draw you in is what makes the movie watchable. But there just simply isn't enough happening to entertain you. And the biggest scenes in the movie are underdone. Shot so dark, you can't really see anything.
If your thing is long drawn out scenes of characters brooding and being sad - you will love it!!

Dark hides the poor production values of that film......Sadly it's all too common these days.
It makes no sense. Literally the most dramatic scenes of the entire film - you can't see a freaking thing! Completely stupid.

That and you have to turn on the subtitles to understand most of the films made in the last decade. No diction quality at all.

I was watching Battle Circus on TCM yesterday, nary a problem understanding them.

Yes!! that is true! Several scenes with Rooney Mara you can't hear a word she says. In one scene we rewinded twice just to see if we could make it out. Even with volume on 53 - nothing.
It was like trying to understand Joe Biden. :D
