Ok, let me put it a different way. It's just not likely to happen, certainly not in our lifetimes. The Second Amendment is a strong Bill of Right.
A full ban would involve confiscation, and while that worked in Australia, the # of guns that were either bought-back, or confiscated in Australia was miniscule compared to what would be necessary here if you were going to literally ban all firearms. There are now 400 million firearms that are privately owned in the U.S., and 46% of households have at least one firearm. Firearm ownership is DEEPLY engrained into our country, our constitution, and Americans themselves. Millions of Americans would resist ANY attempt to take away their firearms, there would be a bloodbath, and many Sheriff offices, and municipalities would refuse a federal order to confiscate their citizens firearms. Fifty years from now the majority of Americans may be willing to change the constitution, but even then it would take a 2/3 majority of the House and the Senate, and then 3/4 of the states, before you could alter or repeal the Second Amendment. This is why I say, banning guns isn't a good argument to ending mass shootings, because it's just not going to happen. Of course it's not impossible, but reasonable? No.
Therefore, we have to look to other ways and methods to decrease the frequency of such events.
Layered protection in such places as schools, churches, malls, and other gathering places, can at least make it much harder for an active shooter to succeed.
