AUSTIN, Texas (TND) — Civil rights organizations on Tuesday filed a lawsuit challenging a new Texas law that would allow authorities to arrest and detain immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally and order them to leave the country.
The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in Austin, came less than 24 hours after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, signed the bill. The law is set to take effect in March.
The bill would also authorize Texas judges to order a person’s deportation without due process and before they have an opportunity to seek humanitarian protection.
The American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Texas, and the Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) claim on behalf of El Paso County and two immigrant aid groups that the new law is unconstitutional and preempted by federal law.
