IT WAS the early 1970s when the first true jumbo jets began flying and this jumbo jet with about 140 passengers aboard was flying from New York down to Miami one moonless night when they extended their nose landing gear getting ready to land but the light showing it was locked down in place would not come on.
They finally tested all the dash lamps and this one still didn't light up, so they tried removing the indicator to see if the bulb was burned out, so the pilot put the craft on autopilot. But all three people in the cockpit got so involved and all three focused on struggling to work on this indicator that none of them noticed that the pilot had inadvertently knocked the autopilot back off and the jet was descending.
They had already delayed their landing so that they could continue to work on verifying the landing gear in place so had flown away out over the swamp away from the airport. Worse, while the airport traffic controller had noticed they were no longer at 2000 feet but instead were only as 900 feet, he did not relay that information back to the airplane.
The brand new plane crashed in the swamp while the crew struggled over this $12 burned out lamp, and nearly 100 people lost their lives, but many parts of the plane were so new and in such good condition, they sent the parts back to be reused in other jetliners.
Later, with no knowledge of these parts or where they had come from, crew aboard the various jets which now carried the recycled parts began reporting seeing ghostly apparitions, and it was eventually realized that the reported apparitions by the crew all fit the descriptions of the three flight command officers who had died in the original jet!
Even more strange, this situation went on for so long with these jets with various crews all shockingly seeing these apparitions appearing and disappearing to them that the airline finally decided to pull all of these planes from service and pay to have the recycled parts from the crashed jet all removed. And amazingly, all the hauntings and reports of apparitions stopped. It was as if the dead crew were sticking around to try to keep anyone else from ever making the same mistakes they did. True story.
