A Supper that tells people you grew up poor without saying you grew up poor

I don’t know what to call them

open faced hamburger bun with chipped beef slices and American cheese slices warmed in the oven til the cheese melts

My dad made this several times a week
In our family we poured cream of mushroom soup over the open faced chipped beef sandwich!!!😁

Meatloaf....classic hamburger stretcher meal in my era!

Fish cakes made of canned Mackerel.....Damn, I hated those things.

Oh gawd. I thought my mom was the only one that tortured their kids with that crap.

When we were younger, with kids, I made a lot of Shut Up and Eat It casseroles.

"Ummm... mom? What's in this?"

"Shut up and eat it, that's what!"

I even remember the cans.

If you was not careful you could get it mixed-up with the cat food.....Pretty much the same difference. ;)

Sure smelled the same.

Hey.... wait a minute...

You don't have to be poor to have fish cakes for dinner. My mom made salmon cakes for my Dad and brother because they both loved fish. Hers weren't that burned, though. And we had oatmeal sometimes, and now I'm hungry for French toast since I read that in a post. A little pat of butter and some warm syrup. Yum.

I'm pretty sure you gotta be starving poor to eat mackerel cakes. shibbers

I think they stunted my growth and made my eye twitch.

LOL....My mom made terrible meatloaf. Stretching was a kind word for it.

One day at supper I was gumming the bready concoction down and mom asked me "don't you like it?"......I told her the meatloaf at school was a lot better....I was not lying either.

She did not say anything but that was the last time she made meatloaf. ;)

fried rabbit and potatoes
Haven't had that in a long time.

Pan fried rabbit is good, though.

These rabbits out here munching on my Black Eyed Susans don't know how lucky they are that I haven't had a taste for em lately.

I dont eat those mackerel patties but I guess it's better than nothing:dunno:

Same. When my daughter was in her high chair, my brother sat beside her with a can of sardines, And he would feed them to her like she was a little bird. She just sucked them down. And then she burped little fish burps. Ack.

At times- we ate all sorts of critters. Whatever dad shot or fished that day. He'd sometimes bring them in in a brown paper grocery bag. Rabbits, squirrels, whatevah...
