Some of us can remember a time when cell phones did not exist. Somehow we managed.
Today it seems a cellphone has replaced the brain stem and people would die without one.

Scammers have found a great friend in cell phones racking up Billions a year in profits from phone scams.
Cellphones have been drastically crippled due to the sheer number of spam calls made everyday.
Governments now use cellphones to track your movements and listen in on your conversations.

But "what if", a significant number of people gave up cellphones?
How would that affect things? I think it would nearly decapitate government efforts to spy on citizens.

It will never happen because humans are flawed and would rather have fingers cut off than lose their phones regardless of any consequences or government intrusion.
How about YOU? Could you make do without a cellphone? It seems there is a quiet but growing number of people considering this.

you dont have an answer for me,,

I could happily live without one since I lived most of my life with one,,

in fact I leave the house all the time without one,,

I'm going to make the assumption from the way the OP is constructed that we are talking about smart phones, the the type of devices that are used for more than communication.

Never had one, and when the establishment forces folks to, that is when the resistance starts in earnest.

LOL....I get more use out of an old one I kept after the 4G upgrade a few years back since it still works for looking up stuff through my internet.

ANY cellphone ....is a cellphone.
Doesn't matter how simple or complex.

I'm contemplating completely giving them up.
THAT will def piss off Uncle Sam.

That said, it's damn convenient to have one for sure.

Get real. I have a cellphone only because I've been forced to own one, because some essential services are unavailable without a cellphone and texting. But I only use it for emergencies. NO ONE needs to carry a cellular phone with them 24/7 unless they are the Secretary of State or some CEO of a billion dollar corporation.

Everyone else has been trained and conditioned to carry one, think they want and need it, otherwise, all these companies out there could not have eliminated all of their customer service departments saving themselves a ton of money and the government could not so easily digitally track everyone around as per the Patriot Act.

Of course I could. But I dont want to. I enjoy it. I enjoy the internet. Obviously, we all do.
As far as govt spying, its not just the phone. Its your TV. Its your Alexa. Its your new car.
Remember those cia cables that got leaked a few years ago?

If your only access to the internet is via a cellphone, then you don't really enjoy the internet.

Using a cellphone for internet is like watching a movie through a keyhole.

.

The only cell phone I own is an ancient flip phone which I keep in the console of my car for road emergencies.

Thanks for reminding me that it probably wouldn't hurt to see if if has a full charge.

Beyond that, I don't know how to answer your poll.

Can Old Cellphones Be Used for 9-1-1 Calls?

Yes — old cellphones can still make 9-1-1 calls as long as they are powered on and can connect to a wireless network NCT9-1-1 Program+1. This is required by federal law, which mandates that all cell phones must be able to reach 9-1-1 at all times, whether or not they are in service Techwalla.

I remember before cellphones. There was a payphone on almost every street corner and I could call home any time I wanted. Within the magic box of the pay phone was a really thick book called "The Phone Directory". If I wanted to know the nearest pizza place, I could just look it up. I could look up phone numbers of people I just met. I sometimes carried a book with me to have something to read while waiting for the bus. Now of course it's different.

There's no payphone so I can't call home or for help in an emergency if I need to. There's no phone directory so I can't look up any numbers. Someone would have to give me their phone number and I would have to find someplace to write it down. Instead of one book, my phone has an entire library. Every book I own is on the phone. Whatever is in the country library is on my phone. I have all of my artwork on my phone and have used it to show my work to galleries and potential buyers. Did that just today as a matter of fact. I can use it to take a quick picture of something I want to remember. Last week, my doctor suggested a new medication, I looked up the side effects while we were still discussing it.

So no. I could not live without my phone. The world has changed just that much.

I love my hand held world information gatherer. It also allows me to make contact with my friends by voice, video, email, text, etc. If it need a recipe, I just ask and it gives me lots of info and choices. I can watch people with great knowledge and scholar teach about Science, human relations, engineering, on and on and on. There has never been such a device in know human history. It also brings me news and entertainment.

Some folks just need to be intelligent enough to use it and not be led around by the nose by things people put in the ether. Like everything else and every other invention, folks need to develop common sense in their use and not be used by them.

And those big heavy books were in every home, and who had to deliver those gigantic heavy books to every home?

Technology fails. Big heavy phone books don't.
