Perhaps a worst case scenario but Trump has largely abandoned his TACO acronym which may have been prematurely applied. This would be the hard nosed negotiating method some of us might have expected and I assume he probably takes a similar approach with China. If America could make domestic rare earth minerals a focus, it doesn't matter the cost initially you need a stockpile; America would have 80% more leverage.
In terms of Canada, he will take the next 90 days to negotiate only with Mexico since they have a hold on the increases for this duration. They will ultimately strike a deal once Trump advises that USMCA as a pact is going to be sunsetted since conditions have changed. He will deem the USMCA (CUSMA in Canada) expired in 2026 when it comes up for renegotiation and hence Canada will be left out of the loop without a trade deal.
Canada will then try to rapidly make a deal with the U.S and the U.S will increase the permanent and broad tariffs against us to say, 20% across the board instead of 15% we might be able to secure now. Canada will raise tariffs as well but will be far less able to absorb them due to the most indebted personal debt on earth and excessive cost of living expenses, especially in housing and rent. Thus, we would have to capitulate.
If Trump is applying the art of the deal, this is how I would see this playing out. Mexico and Canada will be pit against each other since both dragged their feet and tried to run out the clock as China is doing now.
I've warned Canada for decades that our Police State and constant spreading of anti-Americanism would backfire. My initial fear was American becoming insolvent and then really becoming belligerent and desperate which would place Canadas security at risk. It may seem far-fetched now, but any time a nation collapses if they have power there is always a chance it will be used. This was the fear when Russia collapsed which is when the CIA, mi6 and others were aggressively infiltrating Russia because they feared a nuclear response out of desperation when the walls crumbled. It would be better for America to hit the world with tariffs and remain solvent than for the U.S greenback to be replaced, the U.S to be bankrupt. We'd all be at risk then.
If Canada had innovated and kept our best and brightest, we wouldn't have the RCMP, police diddlers and their surrogates destroying our nation for their own selfish gain, we'd have a comparable and competitive nation. Just look at Taiwan or S Korea, we were light years ahead of them and they surpassed us via technology.
Canada has failed it's nation to uphold a dying dinosaur of abusers. I am one such victim. One of many I assure you.
