I suggest that everyone watch this tonight, if possible. The Patriot starring Mel Gibson. I am off work today, and decided to watch it. It reminds me of the truly awsome history of this nation, and, in the face of evil, hard times, and injustice, we still persevere on.
In this war, civilians were targeted as a means of trying to gain control by the British. Like the Islamic terrorists, they had no issue killing innocent women and children-specifically the families of the soldiers. All because they wanted to retain control over the colonies.
This is actually a resemblance to our fight against terrorism in Iraq.
The terrorists want to retain control of the Middle East, all the while targeting women and children not only there, but around the world. All for the sake of their desire to control the Middle East. The Iraqis are becoming stronger everyday, and in January, will elect their own government for the first time. They have to know we have faith in them, and know they can govern themselves.
If America is persisitent, and doesn't waver, we shall succeed, as we have in wars past. It is not going to happen in an instant. It may take a few more years, maybe 10, maybe more. The American Revolution took what, 6 years? And this was a different type of enemy. The enemy we now fight has many more resources and means of harming us.
But we will win, if we are willing to stay the course, and have faith in the very people we are trying to give freedom. Their freedom and independence, ensures our safety and security here at home. We must not let those who are uncomfortable with standing up for not what's popular, but what's right, get in the way, or make us second guess our choices. There were many more casualties in all of our previous wars than this one. Yes, 1,000+ brave men and women in Iraq. This is minute compared to ANY of the other wars we fought.
The revolutionary war was not entirely a popular one with many of the colonies. But it started the creation of our current America. Without that unwavering fight for freedom, we would still be under British control. Just like the Iraqis would still be under Saddam's control.
