A Month or so Until the Winter Olympics

Swedish = Alpint.

English = Alpine.

I'll admit to my favorite is seeing somebody wipe out on the luge.

I find the two-man luge, however, rather sickening.

God I wish I loved it like that. And to be honest, it's possible I could one day get into it. I get into hockey when the red wings are good. If I can do that then one day maybe Michigan will have a great soccer team and that sucks me in. Until then, no interest.
Don't know what to tell you but if you watch actively and realize that they cannot use their hands, you appreciate the techniques on how to pass a ball accurately, how to control the ball, the strategy on the set pieces....

Other than some football and a bit of baseball, and perhaps some hockey during the Stanley Cup, I don't watch commercial television hardly at all. As a kid I enjoyed watching ABC's Wide World of Sports which occasionally featured winter sports which were fun to watch.

As far as ice skating goes, it's not my thing, but it wasn't bad when occasionally they brought out figure skaters between periods at BGSU hockey games. This was back in the 1972-1976 timeframe, they all got a good reception from us in the crowd. One featured skater was a local grade-school kid introduced as "Little" Scotty Hamilton.

IF YOU CAN DODGE A Wrench YOU CAN DODGE A BALL!
Now..dodge ball with wrenches would be interesting!

Another commentator (getting serious here) described the Olympics as being one of the "few campfires" the world has to where we observe the same events; politics is put aside--as much as it can be; and you invest your hopes and fears into the athlete(s) on the field of play.

I love to see Americans do well of course but what I really like watching are the stories of athletes who made it there despite challenges. I recall a middle distance runner; her name long forgotten who would train by running around her neighborhood. Her neighborhood was Sarajevo and this was the time when they were having their issues over there in the 90's. She'd see dead bodies and militiamen in the morning. There was this swimmer from an African nation who trained by swimming in a hotel swimming pool. I think he finished his heat after most of the crowd had left the natatorium. One who stayed behind was, I believe, Ian Thorpe who carried him on his shoulders because he was so exhausted after finishing. I may have those details wrong.

Anyway, expand the campfire I say. I have no idea what this sport is about but I'm intrigued...

And she being from Plano means she also isn't bringing an Adams apple to it.

I'm a sports fan and I hate the Olympics. I'm Greek, and I hate the Olympics. I wrestled, and I still, hate the Olympics. So many stupid events.

Can you believe Lindsay Vaughn is still one of the best? That must mean no one is trying to go into that sport anymore. She's old. You telling me there isn't some young kid who's faster and smaller so they cut through the air better than she does?

Did you see her crash and burn? I'm 55 and recently I fell on my left knee. The next day I could not walk. Or could barely walk. I took a pain killer and it got better. Miraculously, the next morning it was much better. So I got injured by something that would have been nothing more than a bruise when I was a kid, or even in my 30's. Today, it's a sprain. A very mild sprain but you get the point. It's a lot harder to react and recover when you are old. Vonn should be too old to compete with the young kids today. If she is, it's because no one is that good or takes the sport too seriously.

You didn't hear the news? She wiped out. They made it sound like such big news here in Florida. Boy are they hyping her up. So are you saying she's okay and will compete? She's damaged. Now it's only a matter of when she wipes out again.

You betting on her?

Oh me too. She's on our team why would I not? I may dislike the Olympics but I do enjoy watching the total medals won and who's got the most gold. Who usually wins that in the winter Olympics? Who usually wins the Summer? Is it still us? Is it China?

The United States holds the record for the most gold medals in the Summer Olympics and overall (combined) medals, while Norway has won the most gold medals in the Winter Olympics. As of 2026, the USA leads with over 1,200 total gold medals, whereas Norway leads the Winter Games with 148 gold medals.
While Norway dominates the Winter Games (especially in sports like cross-country skiing), the United States has the highest all-time total of gold medals across both events combined.
The United States leads the all-time Olympic medal count by a wide margin, with over 3,100 total medals (combined Summer and Winter), followed by the Soviet Union (historically), Germany, France, Great Britain, and China. The U.S. has won the most medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics, with particularly high dominance in swimming and athletics.
China (CHN): 800-900+ total medals, rapidly rising in the rankings since 2008.

I wish her the very best! 😊❤️
OMG I take back what I said about the Olympics. Downhill skiing is great! And we go to the same church as this woman

Emilea Zingas, a 23-year-old figure skater from Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, was named to the 2026 U.S. Olympic team as an ice dancer with partner Vadym Kolesnik. A former singles skater for Cyprus, she began training in Novi, MI, and earned her Olympic spot after winning silver at the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

I also know her coaches. What a small world.
