In The Effects of Fiscal Stimulus: Evidence from the 2009 "Cash for Clunkers" Program (NBER Working Paper No. 16351), co-authors Atif Mian and Amir Sufi find that in 957 U.S. cities, the surge in automobile sales was short-lived while the program was in place. About 360,000 automobile purchases were induced in July and August 2009.

Yeah, nothing like wasting a bunch of money after the recession already ended in June 2009.

The reason it ended in June, is that Detroit takes 6 weeks to build a car and get it to the dealers. So manufacturing started going up in June, in preparation for sales in July and August.

It was the rise in manufacturing, to make all the cars that would be sold in July and August 2008, that pushed the economy into positive GDP growth.

Oh....they didn't have already made cars on the lot when Obama signed it on June 24, 2009 and that's why the recession ended in June 2009. Because of car sales in July and August.

Not 390,000 of them. And Detroit had to ramp up it's supply chain a month in advance.

Detroit knew it was coming since May, giving them 8 weeks (the usualy delivery time) to get cars to the dealers. They had to ramp up the supply chain, which is what pushed the economy into positive economic growth.
