Leftists confuse support for teachers' unions with support for education. Nothing could be further from reality. The teachers' unions have done almost as much to suppress and prevent any constructive improvement in education as have our rapidly deteriorating culture and the explosion of bastardy.

Why do our schools still have a three month vacation in Summer, when the practice was intended to allow children to help out on the farm? Teachers' unions. Why are school boards frightened to lengthen the school day or increase class sizes? Why can we never have any quantitative evaluation of teachers, with the real possibility of discharging those who cannot teach? Indeed, why is it virtually impossible to remove a teacher for anything less than a felony conviction? Teachers' unions. Why are half the school districts in the country facing virtual or actual bankruptcy in the face of exploding wages, benefits, and mainly pension costs? Teachers' unions. Support for teachers' unions is tantamount for supporting endemic mediocrity in education. Sorry to say.

How many schools are there in the country are there where it can truthfully be said that the school is doing a good job? The "best" public schools are merely the place where the best and brightest kids, with the most accomplished and involved parents, happen to reside. The schools and teachers could be replaced tomorrow with new grads and the quality of the results would not deteriorate one bit.

I would venture to say that any good, competent teacher would be just happy to work in a non-union environment, where compensation and advancement are based entirely on merit. Socialism (unionism) benefits only the worst employees, regardless of whether it's in a school or a factory or a retail store.
