When I did contract maintenance for restaurant chains years and years ago the term 86 was used to describe a total clean out.
It was something beyond the normal daily cleaining in a restauarnt setting. That's where I first heard it. When the manager told an employee to 86 a freezer or cooler or some other object it was meant to be a total ..top to bottom...scrub out that left absolutely nothing behind.
Now I have no experience with the mob so I couldn't tell you a damn thing about how they use the word. But I did actually hear it used on numerous occaisions in the Restaurant industry setting. That's how it was used.
The military uses it too I hear?
