Should be an interesting crowd at the Sixers' games this spring. We are going to a game next month. I'm glad we will be in a club box, lol.

76ers and Philly police announce guns-for-tickets program

February 21, 2006

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Philadelphia 76ers and police officials Tuesday announced a program aimed at curbing gun violence by exchanging tickets for guns.

The one-week program opens Wednesday. Anyone can bring a working gun into a city police station and exchange it for a voucher good for a pair of tickets to an upcoming 76ers game, no questions asked.

"If we get one (gun), it's a successful program," said Billy King, the team's president. "If we get one, if we get a thousand, whatever we get that's going to be good enough."

Sitting at a table with 15 guns ranging from semiautomatic rifles to tiny, easily concealed handguns, Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said the program wasn't only for illegal guns. He would be happy if law-abiding citizens turned in their firearms, too.

"Any gun that can kill needs to be taken off the streets," Johnson said.

The city's murder rate spiked last year and is on a similar pace in 2006. There were 380 homicides in the city in 2005 -- the highest total in five years. There were 44 homicides in the city from Jan. 1 through Monday, just slightly off last year's pace.

The program is similar to one the 76ers ran in 1999. "Guns for Gear" brought in close to 900 guns in just three days.

The 76ers aren't the first NBA team to run such a program. The Denver Nuggets traded tickets for guns for several years as part of the "Operation Cease Fire" program in the mid to late '90s.

Seriously. Even the folks in the nose-bleed seats start out and end up in the same main concourse. I think I'll leave my jewelry home. :cof:
Really? That sucks. They're real hard asses at Wizards games. You sit where your ticket is for, and that's it.

Nah, you misunderstood me. I am talking about the main concourse where you start out before you go into the actual arena and find your seat. It is the only way in and out of the place.

I do remember the thrill of "finding" better seats during a game. I still see it go on, but not in the boxes.

First of all, getting guns "off the streets" does nothing to curb violence. If anything, it gets the guns out of law-abiding gun owners hands, making them more prone to violence by criminals.

Second, as if I wasn't done with the NBA in the first place, I'm deadset against the 76ers from here on out. I hope they go 0-84 from now until they get a new owner, who understands that guns protect people from violence. This guy, by his ignorant quotes, shows himself to be a gun-controling moron. Both billy King and Sylvester Johnson are complete idiots in my book. Keep your hands off my guns!!! :finger:

I get worked up over gun rights in general, but especially when I see people trying to reinforce the "all guns are dangerous" mindset. I'm especially appalled to see the chief of police hope to see legally owned guns turned in, as though homeowners and hunters are somehow responsible for gun violence.

Again Philly. ITs not like the Police Chief is a conservative or anything. Police in general are usually the ones advocatiing gun control to the extent that they should be the only ones with guns. Add to it that Philly is a Democratic stronghold and the socialistic idealogy runs rampant as the money is stolen from all these idiots. I have to pay 6% of my paycheck to the city of Philly for the privelege of working within their borders. Thank god i dont live there. Thatd be another 6%. The city takes more then the state in taxes. Anyway, ITs philly. ITs a bunch of liberal idiots running the show. Not much we can do.

The Chief is no idiot. He added the "law-abiding" phrase to make it sound like he isn't targeting just inner city folks. But you notice that he wasn't giving away ice hockey or ballet tix.

It's the proverbial elephant in the middle of the room (or should we say the donkey in the middle of the room). The eternal PC dance is being played- we all know where the problem lies, but we aren't allowed to say it.

What's your solution for the problem we're not allowed to say, then? Is there one?

Got me. You should watch the Philly nightly news. It's like the Wild West; a whole culture of violence.

Do you have a solution?

Not anything that's bulletproof; it's hardly my area of expertise. No one really seems to have a good plan. It's sad, really.

Give everyone guns, and the ability to defend one's self and property. Gun violence would plummet if criminals knew that they would be targeted during their crimes.

Also, get rid of welfare programs and let people find jobs to support themselves.

There's two quick measures that would get Philly - or any city - back on track.

That's nice in theory, but you wouldn't have a city, you'd have a war zone. I guess it might benefit anyone who survived for the first couple of years. Maybe if you started a new city with no people in it... but for a place as dysfunctional as it already is, I don't think you can count on the population to responsibly handle being flooded with guns.
