Yes the title is an exaggeration but sheesh. I can't fathom the mindset that would cause people to arrest 64 people over finding a small amount of marijuana at a party.

A lawsuit has been settled over the mass arrest of 64 partygoers on marijuana charges.

Driving the news: The defendants — the Cartersville Police Department, Bartow County Sheriff’s Office and the Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force — will pay $900,000 as part of the settlement, the Southern Center for Human Rights said in a news release.

Settlement reached over arrest of 64 partygoers on marijuana charge

So this mad desire to control every aspect of people's lives will cost the people $900,000.

That's one way to spin it.

But the fact is that this was a "settlement", not a judgment of a court. Politicians decided to make this payoff , probably because of the desire to pander to the demographics that the partygoers represented.

Just like the CP5 settlement in New York City.

If the legislature in Georgia wants to legalize grass, so be it. But until then, police agencies have the right to enforce the law.

Which the prosecutor noted was impossible to do as presented to him.

It's a scandal in Georgia.. stupidity on the part of the police.

It was a political decision.

After all, it is the Taxpayers who are ponying up the long green to settle the lawsuit.

Not the police officers, who were denied their date in court.

As the prosecutor notes, they would lose.

Of course that's what he's going to say, if he's the one pushing for the settlement.

I'd want to know what an independent shyster would say about the case and the prospects, as opposed to a political animal.

From the LINK

  • "Police, who found less than an ounce of marijuana in the home, arrested the partygoers."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

64 people over a single ounce!

:muahaha:

The Police screwed this one up badly.

Since it was only an ounce, why didn't someone keister it?

Yet another failure in the failed war on drugs.

Since it was only an ounce why did the police arrest everyone?

Does this seems a good use of police resources?

The police didn't know how much they would find before they started searching the people. As far as it being a good use of police resources- that would depend on the crime rate in Cartersville. If the area is mostly peaceful, this may well have been the biggest law breaking incident happening at the time. Would you rather have had the cops just hang out in a donut restaurant instead?

The award should come from the police pension fund, and should be at least $64,000,000.

The problem with that is that the plaintiffs didn't have a case, and weren't damaged by that much. Further, the Police Pension Fund wasn't at fault, and wasn't being sued. And if they had, they wouldn't have settled and agreed to it.

.

If anyone thinks that 64 people cannot get high on less than an ounce of weed nowadays ...
They haven't smoked pot in a while ... :auiqs.jpg:

The person who brought the weed threw everyone under the bus when they didn't claim it and take responsibility for their crime.
Guess it worked out ... The guilty party got away with it ...
The other party goers got compensated, and one of their friends is still a pathetic asswipe.
