Just young kids, most teenagers staying at a hostel (and one 57 year old American man) drank local whiskey that used methanol as a cheap alternative to ethanol, and these poor kids were killed from it. The only one older than mid-20's was the American dude (staying at a hostel with backpackers?)

Terrible loss, a couple of these kids were only 19.

Before tourist travel they should have a class on the country they travel to and what to avoid.

Yeah, been following that. Next Thursday I'm off to Vietnam. for two months. Maybe I'll skip Laos

Me too, or Nha Trang. First week Vung Tau since it'll still be the ebb of rainy season up north. We can meet up and drink, but not talk politics unless we get very drunk.
When I was in Bangkok last winter I was chatting with an Australian guy and we talked for hours, he lived in Vung Tau and had rode his bike from there, across Cambodia, and had just stopped in Bangkok at the same Starbucks (Terminal 21) and being a cyclist I found the story very interesting. I probably am going to Vung Tau as well, went to Ho Chi Minh only on my last visit. I asked if he took a tent and camped and he snickered, said there is always a family along the road in Cambodia who will put him up for the night.

Have fun in Vietnam, I’ve been many times.. I’ve never been to Laos or Cambodia but you have to expect that kind of poisoning as it’s always happened in the region..

Nha trang isnt as nice as Danang/Hoi An. Nha trang is a bit of a seedy vibe, the beach is so crap and it’s full of Russian tourists. Danang is more the entry point for Hoi An.. Hoi An is the place to be.. food, culture, everything. I spent a month there ten years ago, never got bored.. the best beach is An Bang beach. You want to go early, like after 530am, as its full of locals in the water and they are all playing games on the sand like soccer.. then when the cafes open, there are a few French ones, eat breakfast. I spent every morning there, riding on the back of a motorbike to get there, then i would tell the motorbike guy to come back at 1130 and take me into town where i would eat lunch.. great views getting to the beach at that time of morning.

I kinda liked Nha Trang, but I've never been to Da Nang. I might do both this time around.

I haven’t done Danang, i had 5 nights booked there for the end of my Hoi An stay, but was loving Hoi An so much i cancelled it and just flew out of Danang to Nha Trang instead.. my brother used to live in Hanoi and his favorite place was Dalat, a mountain town not too far from Nha Trang.. i hated Dalat, besides the Buddhist monastery which i would go to every day.. so you know everyone has different taste.. 😀
