Sex and gender prior to puberty is kinda moot. People are pretty much androgynous until their secondary sexual characteristics become more pronounced. Once puberty does begin, and sex hormones start getting produced, their feelings change radically, interest in sex begins, etc.

So however a prepubescent wants to live is moot. Ask him again in a few years.
