Sassy Sasse's bill is part of a Republican effort to squeeze Democrats ahead of 2020

It'd be nice if the Democrats who voted against the bill explain why they did that. But the lawmakers who opposed Sasse's proposal won't be asked to explain their votes because reporters won't ask.

Democrats likely won’t even be asked to explain why they’re offering contradictory reasons for opposing the bill. Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, claimed the Sasse proposal reduces “access to safe abortion care” and that it “would threaten the health of women." Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said elsewhere that the bill “is just another line of attack in the ongoing war on women’s health.”

But then there’s Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who claimed he voted against the bill because it is redundant, arguing that infanticide is already illegal. This is the exact same line used by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., on Feb. 5 when she quashed Sasse’s attempt to have his bill passed by unanimous consent.

But which is it? Is the bill redundant, or will it reduce women’s access to abortive services? If Sasse's bill is redundant, as Kaine and Murray claim, does that mean there are currently laws on the books that “attack” women’s health, as Hirono and Shaheen allege of Sasse’s bill?

Perhaps Democrats should have gotten their stories straight prior to voting.

In a sane world, a tough news media would ask any of these senators, not just the presidential candidates, to explain their opposition to the bill. Newsrooms would at least ask these senators to explain their party’s contradictory reasons for voting “no.”

But, we don’t live in a sane world. We live in one where an anti-infanticide law can fail in the Senate, and newsrooms will run defense for those who voted against it.

I see most people who oppose this law say because it does not address the health of the mother. There is no issue of the mother's health. The child is born, separated from mother. Breathing on its own. How could the mother's health possibly be impacted by removing the child from her presence and giving it medical care?

The 2002 Born Alive Infants Protection Act, signed into law by President George W. Bush, established that any child born alive — even as the result of an abortion — is to be legally considered a “person”, “human being,” “child”, and “individual” in federal law. However, that law contained no penalties for those who choose not to follow it. Senator Sasse’s bill included penalties for abortionists who break the law, including a fine and/or imprisonment for up to five years.

Currently, there are 19 states which afford no protections to abortion survivors. According to the Centers for Disease Control, infants are still born alive every year. Between 2003 and 2014 alone, at least 143 babies died after being born alive during abortions. And according to a press release from Live Action News, “In 2018, 16 infants in Florida alone were born alive after surviving abortion attempts.”

If a doctor or a back allie self taught illegal doctor posing as a doctor, is therefore guilty of these things, then they should be brought up on charges sure.

The only targeting in the bill that is going on, is the targeted focus that is to be pushed in order to save a human being after a specific action that was intended to end with the murdering of babies/human beings who are found alive in these botched butcher dens sadly enough, and that was found attempting to end a life, but botched it.
