Black or white, there was some discomfort when he took that record because he was merely an excellent player who excelled for more then two decades, and he was "replacing" a player who was utterly extraordinary in every imaginable way.

Aaron never had as many as 50 homers in a season.

Rather like Pete Rose, who eclipsed Ty Cobb's record despite a lifetime BA of just a hair over .300, and never batting .350.

Aaron was the home run king, but not the Sultan of Swat. Chemical enhancement aside, Barry Bonds has a better claim to the throne.
