2 U.S. Aircraft Carriers have the coronavirus

One in Guam. The other in Yokosuka Japan. Roosevelt and the Reagan. The Roosevelt is testing every crewman and it will take 25 days. If we needed another lab experiment in a confined place with lots of people in the same airflow.....we just got it.

  • The US Navy is presently dealing with a serious coronavirus outbreak aboard a deployed US Navy aircraft carrier — USS Theodore Roosevelt.
  • The ship is in port in Guam, and the Navy is working to test all 5,000 crew members.
  • At the current pace of 200 tests per day, it would take 25 days to complete testing, acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly said Friday.
  • Calling that time frame "unacceptable," the acting secretary said the Navy is bringing in additional capabilities to expedite the process.
Three cases were reported aboard the TR on Tuesday. By Friday morning, more than 30 sailors aboard the carrier had reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus, according to Fox News.

The TR is one of two US carriers in the Pacific, the other being the USS Ronald Reagan, which is currently in port at Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan. Fox News reported Friday that at least two cases have been reported aboard the Reagan.

“Those sailors are warm and have some body aches, but we don’t necessarily characterize them as requiring hospitalization,” said Admiral Michael Gilday, chief of naval operations.

The ship’s most recent port of call was in Da Nang, Vietnam, about 15 days ago, but it would be difficult to link active cases to that particular visit because there are planes flying to and from the ship all the time, according to Gilday.

Gilday said there were 16 positive cases of COVID-19 reported in Vietnam at the time, all isolated around Hanoi, which is about 500 miles from Da Nang.

He said the ship improved the crew’s medical exams when they returned to the ship in Vietnam.

Gilday also noted that nearly 100 ships, about a third of the Navy, are currently at sea worldwide.

The Navy reported 86 total COVID-19 cases on staff Tuesday, including 57 service members, 13 civilians, 11 dependents and five contractors, Modly said.

The good news is that most of the are in good shape and most of the medical conditions that make the virus more dangerous would disqualify them from service.

I doubt that they will have too much trouble with it. Hardly a pre-existing group there. Was kinda surprised that they may have got it from Vietnam........last port of call..........times change......LOL

Guam has a Hospital on the Naval Base and Air Force Base......Combined. Sure the ones will be isolated there....the Aircraft Carrier has a hospital as well.

Wouldn't it be an ironic twist if saltwater was the cure ?

I wonder if anyone on board has pnemonia, cold, foot or ankle injury, abscessed tooth, .........,

Cruise ships are on the wide open salty ocean and it’s way worse
I thought we learned fromLegionaires not to have bad ventilation systems ??

Air flow goes to the racks and they are stacked on top of each other in tight quarters.........so spread would be very easy.

But we are hardly talking about the elderly and pre existing conditions here..........This will be a bump in the road so to say.

Who knew that aircraft carriers could catch the coronavirus. You'd think that metal ships were made of sterner stuff.

.....yes, they are young ......I wonder if they are social distancing somehow? --not easy on a ship, but possible
