1 million people die due to economy being closed down

We won WWII by hunkering down while we planned our strategy and built our arsenal. That is what we should be doing now. Meat plants having problems with COVID-19, put people to work producing protective suits for workers. Hunker down and fight a defensive engagement until we can fight an offensive engagement.

We wouldn't have had to fight WWII at all, if President Roosevelt would have built up the military instead of embarking on the Raw Deal program. If America had been powerful militarily, Mr. Hitler would not have decided to piss us off by instituting his Holocaust program and the war would have been averted.

Hey STUPID! The USA was founded to stay out of European wars. Until WWII, the US had pursued an isolationist policy and stayed in their own hemisphere. Wars have been a way of life in Europe for centuries. The Founders wanted the USA to stay away from such foolishness.

Hitler would never have come to power if not for the Treaty of Versailles and the economic hardship it imposed on the German people. If you want to re-write history you have to look why Germany was taken over by a populist monster. The German people were hurting.

Notice how the idiot Polish guy immediately goes too "You should have built an army". That's the idiot response to everything. GUNS, WAR and other total wastes of money.

Every dollar you fools spend on military is money that is not going into making your country better. You can't afford universal health care because you spend 4% of your GDP on weapons and the military.

One. Trump did not act to rapidly push for social distancing and an end to large gatherings. Various governors and sports leagues did that. So, just so we are clear, Trump gets no credit for the shutdown.

Two. Had governors not led on this issue, the pandemic would have been worse and our hospitals would have become overrun. That would have absolutely destroyed our economy while killing hundreds of thousands more.

It also would have LENGTHENED the period of time that we would need to enact social distancing policies.

So, all the death that could be attributed to unemployment would have happened anyway.

Your argument is stupid.

How long of a period should America institute Social Distancing policies for? If Joe Biden is inaugurated, how long will he push for it? The technocrats will always advise for longer, you know.

No. I don’t know that. You’re a nutbag conspiracy freak. The measures are designed to save lives AND the economy. These things are connected.

I'm hardly a "conspiracy freak" at all, even though I rooted for Jesse the Body when he challenged for Hulk Hogan's title back in the day. However, I can't see how the current policies are saving the economy or lives. New York City has a lot more draconian shutdown policies than do we in the hinterlands, yet they have a lot more carnage as well.
The shutdown was too late in NYC to be effective. That’s what we’ve learned about this. By the time you notice a problem in your community, it’s too late.

Unless of course you have an exceptionally well coordinated response, like South Korea.

So New York City should not have locked down at all,in your view? It was pointless as it was instituted too late?

Maybe. Although I’d be terrified to see what would have happened had they not.

If America would have spent the money to build up the military in the 1930's, we would have avoided WWII and that incredible cost entirely. America is STILL paying for WW2. The Veterans Administration is still paying for the widows of these WW2 guys, and for their grave markers, nursing homes, VA checks, etc. Money which would not have been spent by the taxpayers if these fellows weren't drafted into the war.

The very simple solution is to give the PEOPLE income replacement until this thing is over. The AMERICAN economy is a killer because there is no hope for working people. This isn't happening in the rest of the world.

Low wages, no health insurance, dependent on government handouts, no worker protections. Time to have a PEOPLE CENTRED government instead of the corporatist agenda which favours people over companies.

People need more than income to survive and to thrive. They need work, they need to be useful and productive, they need to have social interaction. Writing them a check and locking them into their homes indefinitely isn't going to work.

My friends have been useful and productive in the pandemic. Their doing home repairs, painting, redecorating, and working in their gardens. They are using the time at home to do things they never had time to do before and waiting this out.

What my friends aren't doing is worrying about income because they have that. There are concerns for the smallest business owners. My son-in-law hasn't qualified for any assistance because he only has 5 employees, but his employees got $2000 per month so my SIL used his cash reserves to pay his capital loans and business expenses until he acquired the masks and equipment so they could work, and lined up enough work to bring the guys back. They went back to work this week.

Family-run restaurants are down 50% in their business, and there will be losses, but our economy is not cratering and endangered because of this virus. But then we have $14 per hour minimum wage, universal health care, and a government that took care of the people. We're going back to work, and you're still stuck in this mess.

What we aren't doing is forcing people back to work with no protections and no health care while the pandemic rages.

Wrong for one simple reason.

This virus will outlive humans on this planet, so if closing the world is the solution we need to leave the Earth now

Since that is not happening we need to accept that we made a mistake and open for business

There's going to be a new normal as a sizeable chunk of the population is going to continue to limit their spending and shopping. And that's when the economy is fully open. I've talked to several business owners who expect 70 percent at most when things open up. They say that's the new reality

Actually the chinese took a bat virus, sprayed the virus on every jet coming into the USA and used it as an economic trade war weapon. End result, the USA went from winning the trade war to losing with a closed economy

Good business owners will do their best to ensure the safety of their workers...gloves, masks, even gowns will be the norm for smart business owners.

What part of America is broke and in the Great Depression are you not understanding? Do you really think Hitler, the Italians, and the Japanese would have halted their plans because America began building its military?

Trump does not have the authority to close the economy

that decision is up to the governors

but that aside the question is when to open the economy

and you seem to want to stay shut down

Trump has what is known as a BULLY PULPIT. He can urge, cajole, encourage and apply political pressure. He did none of those things. He also has not used the DPA to get us up to speed on PPE, Testing and other equipment. He has failed to lead.

We are locked in my home, except for when we unlock the door and go out somewhere.

DragonLady is not even an American yet she wants to tell us what to do

70% is not enough to support the wipe-every-nose welfare system that liberals are so fond of

it could mean no more food stamps for welfare bums

and a new Grapes of Wraith return to having to work for a living

I have had more conversations with people in my neighborhood over the past month than I had in the year prior. We stand 6 feet apart and chat.

If you are so lonely that you want to kill yourself, I suggest that you call a help line.

How many sane, able bodied adult Americans refuse to work an available job in favor of living totally off of taxpayer funds?

Give me a number, please.

I forget that Americans keep their doors locked. We don't do that in Canada. My door is unlocked all day. We don't fear our neighbours.

america Has Changed as neighbors aren't as neighborly compared to when I was young. Now america Is A Dog Eat Dog World. Every Man For Himself.

Um, my point was we go out as often as we want.
