The Taliban was created along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border in early 1994, five years after US involvement in Afghanistan had ended, five years after Soviet ground troops left Afghanistan, 2 years after the Communist government in Afghanistan collapsed, five years AFTER Reagan left office and 1 year after Bush Sr. left office.

The United States lent support to Saddam in the 1980s because the United States, and most of the rest of the world did not want to see Iran defeat Iraq and threaten Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The Soviet Union though, was the biggest supplier by far of weapons to Saddam's Iraq. Also over 1,000 Soviet troops were on the ground in Iraq aiding the Iraqi military during the Iran/Iraq War.

The Iran/Contral deal was a minor event and simply resulted in the United States supplying Iran with about 2,000 old Tow missiles to be able to use against Saddam's tanks in exchange for aid of the conra rebels in central America.
