Windmills Are Chopping Up California's Golden Eagles

Comparative electrical generation costs - SourceWatch

On May 13, 2008, the California Energy Commission and the California Public Utilities Commission released a comparison of the costs of of new generating capacity from various sources. The analysis for the comparison was prepared by Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc., a consulting firm that prepares studies for utilities, governmental regulators, law firms, and non-profit agencies.[1] These estimates include firming resource costs.

Busbar cost in cents per kilowatt-hour in 2008 dollars:

Coal:

Coal Supercritical: 10.554
Coal Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC): 11.481
Coal IGCC with Carbon Capture & Storage (IGCC with CCS): 17.317
Alternatives:

Biogas: 8.552
Wind: 8.910
Gas Combined Cycle: 9.382 (assumes $5.50 to $6.50/MMBtu for gas)
Geothermal: 10.182
Hydroelectric: 10.527
Concentrating solar thermal (CSP): 12.653
Nuclear: 15.316
Biomass: 16.485

Here are some renewable biased numbers that don't come from a pure propaganda machine.

Even these numbers are based on unproven & yet to be achieved 2016 technology.

More than the existing bird mortality from power lines?

You tell me and show me some evidence to support your claims. There was a time when raptors were being killed by landing on high tension towers, but everywhere that was happening, a "perch" of sorts was set higher than the insulators on the towers and the birds naturally perched on the higher spot. To the best of my knowledge, the problem was solved. Do you have any evidence to the contrary?

That is an example of a retrofit that actually worked. Now what ideas are out there to prevent raptors, bats, and miagratory birds from being killed by windmills other than to simply wait for them to go extinct for the killing to stop?

You think perches on windmills will work?

Probably not, since they're FLYING when they are hacked up. I don't think there's a retrofit for that...if there is, it will involve the birds moving out of range of the windmills and THAT will result in TREMENDOUS loss of habitat.

Exactly. Think of displacement. I mean, it's displaced habitat anyway, it will just be really obvious. And birds will still run into them. Because they rotate and turn. They don't just turn.

For any that doubt the validity of the original quote, the Audubon Society has known of this problem for 15 or 20 years. And the leftists just figured that because their intentions were good that they weren't required to do the same enviromental impact reports that everyone else had to do.. After all, they were on God's mission to save the planet..

They tried painting the hubs and the blades in different patterns. Even studied tethered birds vision systems. Spent $MILL at DOE studying the problem. Not the only problem. The raptors are drawn to rodents that just love the added burrowing opportunities. Maintenance of these monsters are never-ending as opposed to say an oil pump site. So the human intrusion footprint is much higher. Not to mention the noise from the larger fans approaching any turbine spinning at those rates. You can hear these for miles.

Anyway, their efficiency is known to be only about 30% of the RATED MW ratings. Something that early buyers didn't appreciate. So claims of what capacity is installed is HIGHLY over-rated. And to boot, because you can't instantly idle the Nat Gas or Coal plant that's backing up this farce, you ARE generating pollution as the wind turbines are taken on and off the grid by excess (non-utilized) energy from the fossil fuel plants..

Leftists need to know this stuff. It's kinda like the strange dude behind the curtain in the Wizard of Oz.. There's not much there. The claims of alternative anything are dying a slow death.. Just like when Hydro was the fancy "alternative", now the dams have to come down for the salmon..

PS --- THanks for the cost graph WireBender!!! Good Stuff.

Leave it to liberals to come up with fabulous ways to waste $$$. They are born to come up with stupid idea's. Spend any amount to find a solution to anything and everything, no matter the cost. At least they are far more predictable than the stupid-ass soothsayer guesses they make. And after all..........they do fill our lives with entertainment!!

It's so nice to see conservatives care about wildlife.

oh brother...

It would be nice to see Liberals care as much about the unborn child as they do WILDLIFE.. But that is not to be..

They don't care so much about wildlife either if said wildlife is not politically expedient. They wear their hypocricy like a crown on this and several other issues.

Clue #1: Innovation doesn't come from gov't subsidies.

They don't seem to be able to grasp the fact that the best and brightest aren't working for government. Those working for government are there either for idological reasons or because they weren't talented enough to get real jobs.

Interesting. A judge (a position not available anywhere except in government) and two scientists from the distant past. Scientists who, by the way, were at best, civilian contractors, not actual government employees.

So first you make an incorrect statement. Then when that's pointed out..you have to qualify it.

Interesting.

I see. The scientists in the Manhatten Project were not working for the government? How about the scientists and engineers at the Skunk Works?

Bentwire, your ideological blindness is a wonder. Are you ever going to think for yourself, or will 'Conservative' talking points forever by the limits of your intellect?

okay so, to be brief-

central valley farming -Out- delta smelt
wind machines - out- chops up birds...
solar power- out- transmission lines destroys lizard habitat
shale exploration- out- destroys lizard habitat
nuclear power-out- leaves behind waste
fossil fuels-out- take your pick

did I miss anything?

Solar is great. Everyone should have panels on their roof.

Back to the military. I already said that there is no doubt that some of the most brilliant minds on earth work for the military. Of course, the military actually expects results from its employees. Maybe that is why the GI bill is the only government program ever to actually deliver what it promised.

He didn't say the workers on teh Manhattan Project or the scientists at Skunk Works. He said the three listed weren't gov't workers.

So basically you're walking back your initially incorrect statement.:doubt:

Sure they were.
