I have never stepped inside a walmart probably never will. Walmart is a part of the decline of the American middle class, their wages and destruction of small business contributed greatly to the separation of wealth in our nation. They are also one of the major contributors to China as they serve as a major distributor and employer. While this is not necessarily bad, their actions in America hardly make them a good citizens. Support Americans too. But I doubt you will stop the walmart mentality as people look for bargains. I know people who are in the top 1% of wage earners who shop there, so given that Americans and most humans make decisions based on unknown things inside their head, change is hard.

I've personally boycotted Walmart for the last 5 years or so. It has nothing to do with their catering to any ethnic group but rather that I hold Walmart responsible in large part for the loss of manufacturing jobs in the USA. I do, however, boycott Home Depot based on an ethnic issue. A few years ago, Home Depot made an agreement with La Raza that 25% of their new hires would be Hispanic. I feel that racist is racist no matter which group you're favoring.

They are made that they drive a hard bargain with the wholesales so good that they get better pricing then competition, especially the mom and pop. The other big beef is that Walmart offer such expense health insurance coverage that none of their low paid employees can buy them.

I shop at Walmart and will continue to shop there until another store opens that has lower prices.

Why should I pay $30 for a Levis denim shirt when I can get the exact same shirt for $15? That savings allows me to put an extra $15 into my retirement savings. Sure no big deal right? But $15 dollars a year for 40 years earning 10% adds up to 8000 dollars and that's just the savings on one shirt a year. Add up the savings on jeans, shirts, sweats, underwear, cleaning supplies etc etc etc and you'll do better than social security.

Remember, a penny saved in a penny earned.

I already don't shop at Wal Mart. I think they suck. Fortunately, not shopping at Wal Mart is pretty easy where I live because New Orleans only has one Wal Mart. We have a local chain of grocery stores that is very price competitive and has much better and more locally relevant foods, and there are home improvement stores coming out the ass here because of the rebuild, so there's not really any need for Wal Mart.


But I don't really see the problem with trying to target Hispanic customers. What's wrong with that? Isn't it OK to make money off a demographic? Did you bitch when McDonald's started targeting African Americans?

In fact - maybe I'll go and shop at the one Wal Mart in New Orleans today just to piss you off.

I wasn't aware there were any anti-Hispanics on this board.

Anti-illegal immigration, yes. But no anti-hispanics. I'm against illegal immigration, but my daughter in law and granddaughter are Hispanic, I spent the last 20 years in farming communities where we have a huge Hispanic population (hey,just look at our jail, that tells the story). And I'm tickled to death that Walmart not only caters to that population, but also provides them with permanent jobs that allows families to actually settle down and provide their children with insurance (thank you Walmart.)

I was just talking about this today with a co-worker. I think it's idiotic that our stores don't provide at the very least, the top 10 bestsellers in SPANISH. We bitch and moan about Hispanics being illiterate...but we don't provide them anything to read in Spanish. Most Hispanics I know can read just fine. But you can't really assimilate into the society unless you can read, even if it is in your own language, the literature of the day.

In fact, I was musing that it would be a HUGE opportunity for some enterprising soul to start a series of books aimed at Hispanic children, written in Spanish AND English, about Hispanic kids assimilating into our culture or middle class kids assimilating into theirs. You know, a kid from Mexico who loses his family and lands with relatives he doesn't know in Podunk, Ohio, or a white kid from Podunk ending up in Mexico City. Then make a series of it....putting them in different cultural settings, and making the books available in both Spanish and English (or even pidgin) in our stores here and in Spanish speaking countries.

I can't believe it when I walk to the book section in any of our department stores, and there are no Spanish books. It kills me, because we have so many Spanish speaking people in our community.

I find myself int he anti-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION and pro-border fence and security crowd. However, I have no problem with this. Its a smart business decision. I will continue to shop at Walmart, because they sell brand-name products at deep discounts (in my case diapers)!

You know I wonder how long it will be until Aldi is targeted by the anti-capitalist crowd! Another store I shop at!

First off I shop at Walmart and its far from a haven for just rednecks. Far from it! I went there last weekend to get diapers.
