I'm a bit torn by this. The Congressional Budget Office claims DOD could “save billions” by replacing certain military positions with civilians. Anyone who knows anything about the military understands it takes 4 REMFs to support 1 combat soldier. Some efforts have been made by having cooks and kitchen personnel civilianized. The same holds true with base security around the world.

The upside is that a lot of these converted jobs are being taken by ex-military personnel who did the same jobs in uniform,

The downside to me is that unless these jobs are done by contractors, it will add tens of thousands to Civil Service roles. And what happens when units have to deploy. How do they take their vital support with them?

Somethings being replaced by civilians I have no problem with, but not base security. Nobody has your back like a brother or sister in arms.
