Sheboygan officials go public with South Pier District casino plan | Green Bay Press Gazette | greenbaypressgazette.com

From the news report:

The casino itself would be put through a complex, several-year long federal approval process that would also likely involve a public referendum in Sheboygan.

I'm not particularly in favor of casinos. I'm asking about the general principle. Why should it take years to get approval for any business? Okay, so one which might involve moving mountains, I could see the need for all the impact studies. But something like a casino? And there's still the possibility that after all those years of trying to get approval, you could get turned down.

I'm having trouble understanding why anyone who has an alternative would put themselves through what it takes to start a business in America. Maybe patriotism is why - but it seems to me that regulators are straining patriotism to its limits.

Back in the 1950's the Marble King marble factory burnt down and it was only about a month before they were in operation at another site.

These days the company probably would have gone under in the attempt to obtain new building permits.

It's nuts. There has to be a better way.

Fuck casinos. One of the best things living in Montana was that I could walk into a bar and play Texas Hold 'Em. Card playing was not a government granted monopoly issued by the state.

However, most gambling is a government issued monopoly, except when the Feds gamble with our own money.

Why not? What intrinsic real societal value do they have other than another avenue to exploit people?

Casinos have to go through a long process of approval because of rules made by nanny-state religious types and NIMBY people.

At least legalize card playing for christ's sake.

Where is the exploitation in that?

You can play cards anywhere you like. Why do you need a government sanctioned institution to do it? You like the extra regulations and fees?

Taxing the stupid class takes time. You have to work them up into a lather first.

I wish I had another example other than casinos. I was afraid the gambling issue might complicate this thread. I'm sure the problem isn't limited just to them. But I don't have other specific examples handy.

Actually, I do have one other story related to how long it takes enterprises to get approval. Wisconsin is working on legislation which would speed up the permitting process for iron mines. I'm not totally sure it will pass though.

Mining bill faces difficult battle in Senate
