Why The Individual Mandate Is Not A ‘Massive Tax Hike’ On The Middle Class

As usual, Lakota posts up a thread in the wrong forum. 90% of this guys stuff should either be in the PHILOSOPHY forum or the ECONOMICS forum. Its called not getting it.

Anyway........... cutting right to the politics, this peels off even more independents = 100% certainty. Sure some k00k liberal sites are going to spin shit, but the political fallout is that since Justice Roberts identified application of the law as a "tax", it cant be spun. Imagine the billions of ads we will see in the fall of the out and out lies on this from Obama. This will also cut into the younger voter bloc that went overwhelmingly for Obama in 2008. Also........this ruling makes certain the unemployment rate remains high for the balance of the year ( when you add the spectre of the expiration of the Bush tax cuts).........small business will not be hiring for shit. 55% of America loaths this health care law. Obama won 53% of the vote in 2008..............do the math!!!:eusa_dance::eusa_dance:

To my conservative pals in here.........the k00ks will be falling all over themselves spinning BS for the next 4 months. Wont matter............in November, we'll see a reversal in the numbers from 2008. Romney just needs to hone his message a bit and simply show up for the debates when people start tuning in. The Independents will be in the bag..........and get this........ middle class liberal Democrats who dont want to be insured by the government will be coming over to our side ON THAT ISSUE ALONE:D:D.

Its all good..........yesterday sucked, but in the bigger picture, conservatives won the politics yesterday.

winning:rock::rock:

I agree that if Romney stays on message with this, it is a total blowout. But Obama is a seasoned Chicago Style campaigner- expect every little possible nasty to be used.

The article is bullcrap.

Places like Mayo are already dumping Medicare because they are losing money. The only way they make it up is by cutting salaries.

I know far to many young people who have decided not to go to medical school because of this mess. We are already headed for a shortage of doctors because of the AMA,s miscalculations. It is only going to get worse.

You guys just bought us a two-tier medical system.

Great job !

Didn't we already have a two teired system?

Or more like a three teired system.

But if you are becoming a doctor because you want a 50 foot yacht and you can only buy a 30 foot one, you are probably a doctor for the wrong reason, and the medical profession is better off without you.

You make all the claims you want....if you have friends in the medical field, you see the difference.

Unless you work in the medical field, maybe you should leave those judgments to others.

But...but...but...but...It's not a gargantuan tax hike!....Really!

Your mind set is why America is fast becoming the land of mediocrity. If Someone wants to pursue wealth- what profession should the government direct them into Joe?

Apart from high risk surgical or Psychiatry most doctors can't afford malpractice insurance any longer. Numerous states have a hard time keeping a sufficient number of OBGYN''s for instance because their insurance costs price them out of the market in private practice.

I have read pages of debates where people from my side always miss the crux of why Tort reform is essential- Tort reform, such as in Texas, has made practicing medicine affordable for doctors again.

Both the very poor and very rich had nothing to lose. They will both celebrate this ruling. It's the Middle Class who will suffer and pay for this. But in reality, all Americans will suffer. Big Brother now owns your body. American Citizens have become his slaves with this ruling.

Please explain - with some credible facts.

Simple, actually, for those with a brain.

The rich have coverage so they're not going to see any change.

The poor qualify for so-called "free" coverage.

This only affects the Middle

At the time Massachusettes passed it's own insurance mandate, the state had approximately 8% of the citizens uninsured. Massachusettes is a fairly affluent state. It's like saying Beverly Hills won't see their taxes raised enough to even be noticeable.

The Supreme Court ruled today that the Affordable Care Act, the comprehensive health care reform package signed by President Obama in 2010, is constitutional. The Court upheld the law’s most controversial provision, the individual mandate, ruling that it is constitutional under the government’s authority to levy and collect taxes.

Republicans have falsely claimed the mandate was the “biggest tax increase ever in American history,” so of course, conservatives immediately jumped on the idea that the individual mandate was a massive tax hike on the middle class, reviving an argument Republicans have made since the law passed more than two years ago:

The mandate can indeed be characterized as a tax, as the Court found. But it is not a massive tax hike on the middle class, much less the biggest tax hike in American history. The tax imposed by the individual mandate amounts to either $695 or 2.5 percent of household income for those who don’t have insurance and are not exempt based on income levels. By comparison, the payroll tax cut extension Republicans repeatedly blocked earlier this year would have added 3.1 percentage points to the tax and cost the average family $1,500 a year.

The mandate, meanwhile, would hit a small amount of Americans — somewhere between 2 and 5 percent — according to a study from the Urban Institute. The number could be even lower depending on the law’s success: in Massachusetts, the only state with an insurance mandate, less than 1 percent of the state’s residents paid the penalty in 2009.

The majority of the Affordable Care Act’s other taxes, such as a payroll tax increase and a tax on high-cost health plans, are aimed at upper-income Americans. In exchange, millions of jobs will be created as new people enter the health care system and millions of people will gain access to affordable, quality insurance that they otherwise would not have. And, as we detailed earlier today, the Court’s decision to uphold the entirety of the law will have significant benefits for the nation’s economy.

You do realize that ThinkProgress is the propaganda arm of the Communist/Marxist/Socialists, funded by George Soros who openly admits the "best time of his life was working for Adolf Hitler and the Nazi's confiscating property of the Jews"?

If you want some ACTUAL facts, this has now been announced as the largest tax hike in US history. 22 new taxes to pay for this bullshit bill.

The fact that the Supreme Court just ruled this bill as Constitutional based solely on the fact that it is a tax shows how ignorant both ThinkProgress and you are...

that fact they BELIEVE thinkprogress and then post it here shows how ignorant they are..

Q: How much will the “tax” penalty be for going without health insurance?

A: The minimum assessment will be $695 per person (but no more than $2,085 per family) in 2016, when fully phased in. The amount can be higher depending on income. But there are exemptions for low-income persons and others.

Fact Check

Maybe you are in the $2,085 or higher category..

We haven't even addressed the shortage of doctors or rationed care. Those with money can get the best care and of course, Congress is exempted.

And every democratic interest group.

McDonald's, 29 other firms get health care coverage waivers - USATODAY.com

The biggest single waiver, for 351,000 people, was for the United Federation of Teachers Welfare Fund, a New York union providing coverage for city teachers. The waivers are effective for a year and were granted to insurance plans and companies that showed that employee premiums would rise or that workers would lose coverage without them, Santillo says.

I'm still confused. If the government can't force me to eat broccolli, but can tax me or fine me if I don't ? That's just what the Obamacare ruling is. What has this country become?

Eating broccoli, mandatory physicals and "preventative" testing. Libs aren't satisfied with equal opportunity. They want equal outcomes. See our educational system.

Every year, the government taxes me for not having children. What's the difference?

then you should be asking the Government change that, not using it to justify what the Government is DOING now

You need to learn to think. The other poster was, as have many, acting as if getting taxed for not doing something is somehow unprecedented and outrageously novel.

Getting taxed for not having children has been around for decades in this country.
