CDZ Why is socialilsm so attractive to younger voters?

Sometimes the youth see things that could be and ask 'why not?' Notice it was Trump who stated that we should take immigrants from advanced countries like Norway, which is basically a socialist country. Norway didn't get that way by being hard core right wing like our present day dems or repubs, who only exist to serve the very wealthy and corporations. Well, to give democrats some credit, they believe the poor and less fortunate should be thrown a bone with a little meat on it now and then. For this, they are given the name socialist, commies etc. , by the right wingers.

Which comes down to a hand up vs a hand out

Many, these days because it's PC, redefine 'socialism' towards what is only a hand out, or welfare

Explaining it gets old

Especially to those who can't even spell it in the first place

thx

ALL young people do is wander around going, "Why not?" Usually, they then grow up and find out "why not".

I think that socialism is attractive to many young people for the same reason that it is attractive to many old people (like me): The idea of socialism is wonderful.

Just ask anyone who works for the government (police officers, teachers, letter carriers, career members of the armed forces, etc.) why socialism is wonderful: Those government employees usually have a job for life, they get very generous salaries, they get a defined pension, they get health insurance. What's not to like about socialism?

*****

Sadly, socialism is NOT economically feasible for the whole population. (That's why socialism has failed in Cuba and Russia and China and Sweden and the United Kingdom.)

My job for life as a teacher turned into 8 different school districts mostly due to layoffs. The defined pension you speak of is a myth. I paid my own retirement, thank you! I paid for a portion of my health insurance also. That generous salary doesn't look so good when you are working somewhere for 20 years and still make less than $50K.

You have no clue.

I think it mostly boils down to ignorance, not of their own doing either. Our educations establishment has only moved further and further left, with too many teachers with straight up agendas at worst or just biases that make it into their curriculum at best.

If a young person has never been taught how economics work, or the philosophy behind how you own your labor, then they'll naturally be in favor of the idea of everyone getting paid the same cause it's all rainbows and sunshine when everyone is "equal."

What evidence do you have of this?

I taught economics for many years in high schools. You are barking up the wrong tree yet again.

I think it boils down to a sense of entitlement. That is possibly due to parenting (and I am as guilty as anyone) to giving that sense of entitlement to their kids.

Well, to begin with it is like the old adage....'if a socialist understood economics he would not be a socialist'

That's a good start. And similar to how I think it happens for young people. But it's broader than just not appreciating the intricacies of economics and serving each other usefully in a society. It's extends to EVERY complicated aspect of how things work.

The answers for socialism are generally much simpler than the "better answer" to any issue. Simple is good when you're not used to the complexity of reality. Because it's a difference between selling IDEALS and IDEAS. There's a world of difference there.

It's always simpler to impose mandates based on ideals and feelings and dogma than it is to engineer solutions and fix things with knowledge of the all the moving parts. When you get older -- you can't buy ideals as easily once you appreciate the complexity of the issues.

Socialism is attractive to the upper-crust elitist liberals and progressives because slumming is a form of catharsis. It makes them feel less guilty about having all the wonderful things they have.

Of course, the 150 million or so people who were murdered by variants of socialism would vehemently disagree with them, if they could.
That's not socialism, that is communism,, dope. Another stupid thred where the dupes don't know the difference. Socialism is always democratic communism never.

Socialism is just fair capitalism perhaps nationalization of Health and energy, with a good safety net, like every other successful modern country. 5 week vacations good health care good day care family leave paid, cheap training and College, good infrastructure have the rich paying more than the middle class in taxes. You people are brainwashed Twits.

Since when doesn't the rich pay more then the middle class?

Depends on the degree of Socialism

Supply side economics is obviously not working

The economy appears to be humming along very well....unemployment at the lowest level in decades.....hmmmm whas up wid dat?

Can you imagine 3.8 percent unemployment, a fifty percent tax cut to corporations and salaries have barely budged ?

That is the wonders of supply side economics
Why cant we have a more even economy like Cuba or Venezuela
