When homophobia, racism, anti women's rights, anti immigrant and other types of hatred are mentioned, people always assume it's from the right wing. How did one half of America get this reputation?

There are several key items that help explain why certain negative qualities tend to appear on the right side of the political and psychological spectrum. Conservatives are basically hierarchical, fearful of difference, avoid change or find it uncomfortable, and are rigid in the patterning of their thoughts and experiences. They stick to bad ideas even when the evidence is overwhelming. There are too many recent historical happenings to name today where they stay with an obvious incorrect assessment.
In and of themselves these qualities do not lead to the racism or homophobia, but rather provide a more fertile ground than a more open or liberal cast of mind. This has been studied since WWII, especially after the horror that brought a nation considered democratic and educated to self imposed tragedy. One only has to look at the aftershocks of 911 in the US to realize how quickly fear can bring on a loss of respect for others, and a forfeiture of law and thus freedom.
"Many psychologists believe personality can be categorised into five classes, relating to conscientiousness, openness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. The latter two seem to have little to do with political orientation. Scores on the conscientiousness scale, however, show a significant correlation with position within the political spectrum.
A much stronger link exists between political orientation and openness, which psychologists define as including traits such as an ability to accept new ideas, a tolerance for ambiguity and an interest in different cultures. When these traits are combined, people with high openness scores turn out to be almost twice as likely to be liberals.
Combine the genetic influences on personality with the political tendencies of different personality types, and the idea that genetics shapes political tendencies seems very plausible indeed. All of the big five personality traits are highly heritable (Journal of Research in Personality, vol 32, p 431), with several studies suggesting that around half of the variation in openness scores is a result of genetic differences." ingentaconnect Heritabilities of Common and Measure-Specific Components of the B...
