I got tired of being an admin on my own board. It's nice to be a member and not have to enforce rules.

It was a political message board. We had a no spamming and no porn policy. I got tired of the assholes that wanted to ignore that.

You have to widen your search, not narrow it. Dismiss the editorializing and focus on the actual people and events making the news.

Actually, I think that is what I am doing here.

I'm getting different perspectives on things that are important to me. I read the "news". I watch the "reports". I follow what is going on around me but when I come here, I can broaden my perspective on the issues.

For instance, when I first started coming to these sites, I was a gung ho Pro-life Advocate who believed all Pro-choice people were really Pro-Abortion and held parties at each abortion. (okay, I'm stretching the part about parties) But anyway, as I talked with more and more Pro-choice people, I found that some were almost as pro-life as I was, but they were dead set against government control.

That is how I view this site. Additional information. Not necessarily reliable, but information about how people view different topics. I can pretty much tell when someone is writing from their heart and when they are DevNelling.

That is why I come here.

I think most people who post here, post what they believe. Granted there are trolls... you for instance... but they are pretty easy to ignore. But when you get down to the discussions such as the one going on now about the Healthcare Bill, people tend to speak their mind and I believe honestly.

As for "confusing news with commentary" is there really any "news" anymore or is it all commentary?

When I come here, I can read what you think of a subject and typically, I agree with it. And then I can read what Sweet Willy has to say and I can go, "WTF?" But, I do get an idea of how others see what is going on around us.

I've made up my mind, but that doesn't mean I'm close-minded to other people's points of view.

All of the media isn't full of lies and bullshit. However, I still find it harrowing (though I know it to be true) that there are people who will bypass first hand information entirely, and go straight to rumor and conjecture, and think they're getting a more accurate view that way.

I find the media to be singularly biased as well, but I still seek out news, and then go with it and look further into the issues that I think are important.

I don't bypass the "news". I simply come here to read other people's points of view on the news and maybe find stories of interest that I might have missed. I've actually had my eyes opened to things that I have not understood because I was looking at things from a totally different perspective. Sweet Willy, for instance, is arguing right now that right-wingers are getting what they deserve for ignoring the plight of left wing protesters for 40 years. Honestly, I would never have thought about it in that sense, but in some respects he is right. The right did ignore the plight of those who protested and in fact persecuted many of them.

I don't agree with Sweet Willy, but it is a different perspective than I would have come up with and something to think about.

But the point is Dev... and I can't believe I am actually discussing anything at all with you because I have always found you to be a joker who I figured couldn't write a serious sentence if I was holding a bazooka to your head... in fact, I think this is the first time we have even conversed... that different opinions do come out here and right or wrong they are honest opinions. I won't say I am always right and I sure as hell am not the smartest person on this board, but neither am I the dumbest. I get to read how honest people view things.

Then there are the hacks... we all know who they are just by reading their posts. Sometimes I read them, some times I skip them. But there are honest people here with honest opinions and points of view that make discussions like this quite interesting. Sometimes I even learn somethings. For instance, posting in this thread has actually taught me that you can write a serious sentence. Quite revealing.

Ignoring the protesters would be pretending they were not there. Ignoring the plight of the protesters is not standing up for their rights when they are being persecuted. Not defending their right to protest.

There is a big difference there, friend.

The right has allowed civil rights protesters to be hosed down by the government for marching in the streets and the right has said nothing to prevent it. That is what I am talking about.
