The current government would be happy to just drag your carcass out of the way and replace you with some illegal from South America or Mexico if you were killed by some stereotypical "gun nut".

The only reason why murder is even a crime is because it disturbs society as a whole and robs the state of your likely productivity(income expenditure, future kids etc)
