Is it intentional ignorance?

My GF is an Indian (ethnicity), she was born in London. In England she is rightfully referred to as Asian (South Asian).

What's the deal with America? Lack of education?

Because Indian refers to two very different races in the western hemisphere. Also there is a cline in American natives involving East Asians in the west and south America but mostly pre-historic Europeans on the east coast of North America as in talking about Indians as south Asians around Apaches for example could get you killed. The same thing came up when I queried "23 and me" about how could I be 2% East Asian since there were no East Asians where my colonist ancestors settled in the 17th and 18th centuries. The rule of thumb is multiply east Asian by about 4-6 to get East Coast Indian ancestry and with Cherokee it's at the top of the range. East Indian is a lot safer and is conducive to a longer life around here.
