Maybe you've never attended a "parent orientation" for entering college freshmen, but I remember being told CLEARLY by the University Chancellor that "your 18 yr old is now old enought to MAKE those life decisions. And you as a parent have NO RIGHT to access their records or questions their decisions. It's time to let go...".
Was this college professional pulling my leg?
The point is that the generation that is now reaching adulthood has been told their entire lives that you can't make anything of yourself if you don't go to college. They were bombarded with facts about who makes more money, their teachers were constantly preparing them for college, parents were sacrificing to add to the college fund... EVERYTHING was about going to college. They were told to do whatever they had to do to get there, whether that meant going into debt, working two jobs, saving though high school and whatever else it took. If you didn't go to college, you would be viewed by potential employers as not worthy of even flipping burgers. You would constantly be losing jobs to those that had college experience. I don't understand why people don't realize that this country successfully convinced an entire generation that they would be absolutely worthless without a college degree and then turned around and laughed at them when they ended up tens of thousands of dollars in debt.
