Why are conservatives so convinced that liberals detest the wealthy?

President Barack Obama’s plan to make the tax code more “fair” by permanently raising taxes, on the top 1% by $1.5 trillion over 10 years.

Yet we have a Government that over spends more than a 1 trillion every year.

Bringing in 1.5 trillion over a 10 year period, is not going to help at all to bring down the spending in Washington.

Our Government brings in a little over 2.2 trillion every year and only 53% pay taxes.
2 trillion is more than enough for our government yet they spend 1 trillion more.

When does the growth stop? Each and every year government has gotten bigger and bigger and borrowed more and more.
Government has grown to an unsustainable amount and needs to be cut back.
They need to spend what they bring in and not borrow any more until we get our deficit down.

Raising taxes on the rich is not going to remedy the problem.

But the other reason why the deficit is so large is because there isn't enough revenue. Tax rates for the wealthy are at their lowest point. What we need to do is stop government spending and raise taxes. Not just on the rich but the lower brackets as well.

There is an UNGODLY amount of revenue.... It is a goddamn spending problem...

It's like telling a person making 500K a year, with 5.5MIL in debt, that he is not making enough money or that he's a low earner and needs to make more... No.. The stupid motherfucker needs to live within his means... and this stupid motherfucking government needs to spend within it's means

Ungodly? Not even close.

What is their fair share?

The top 1 percent of earners account for 20.3 percent of total personal income in the United States and pay 21.5 percent of all federal and state taxes. The middle 20 percent of households earn 11.6 percent of US income and pay 10.3 percent of taxes. The lowest 20 percent account for just 3.5 percent of income, and pay 2 percent of all taxes.

On average, the wealthiest people in America pay a lot more taxes than the middle class or the poor, according to private and government data. They pay at a higher rate, and as a group, they contribute a much larger share of the overall taxes collected by the federal government.

There may be individual millionaires who pay taxes at rates lower than middle-income workers. In 2009 1,470 households filed tax returns with incomes above $1 million yet paid no federal income tax, according to the Internal Revenue Service. That, however, was less than 1 percent of the nearly 237,000 returns with incomes above $1 million.

This year, households making more than $1 million will pay an average of 29.1% of their income in federal taxes, including income taxes and payroll taxes, according to the Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank.

Households making between $50,000 and $75,000 will pay 15% of their income in federal taxes. Lower-income households will pay less. For example, households making between $40,000 and $50,000 will pay an average of 12.5% of their income in federal taxes. Households making between $20,000 and $30,000 will pay 5.7%.

Of course the top 1% pay more in taxes, but given their income, they aren't paying enough. Their tax rates are at an all time low.

Typical liberal thinking when they say someone has more than they need, so they should give it up. The wealthy already pay nearly twice the percent the middle class does and 4 times the percent of the lower earners. What is enough? Half? That's what Canadians paid when they had their ultra liberals in power. Maybe the government should just take all the money and dole it out equally and then they'll be the only wealthy people in the country.

Why it is that people look at wealth and say those people shouldn't make that much or should give more of it up? They earned it. I suppose in the future, liberals will start making people move out of homes that are bigger than they need. That's already happening in some socialist countries. Who in the hell are liberals to say some have no right to keep more of what they earn, even though they pay more than others already? Obama did say that at some point, people have made enough money, so I see where he's going with his agenda.

The liberals are more interested in funding their dependents rather than encouraging them to go out and create their own wealth. Wealthy people are the favorite targets of liberals, though many liberals are wealthy and they sure love those rich people when they are looking for campaign donations. Obama wants a trillion dollars for his campaign and we know damn well he isn't getting it from his average supporters.

The sooner you realize that paying taxes is a good thing, the sooner you can get away from this misguided thinking about liberalism and socialism.

Because there is nothing stopping the folks who want more from bettering themselves to get what they feel they deserve.

Sure there is: the fact that only so many people can be successful. How many "so many" actually is, is determined by the rules of the economic game.

Right now, we have economic game rules that are directed towards maximizing the winnings of the biggest winners, rather than opening opportunities for everyone else. That means that the opportunities are much less than they were when I was a boy and the orientation of government policy was the direct opposite.

It will always be possible for "the best" -- the most dedicated, the smartest, the hardest-working -- to achieve success. What varies is how good someone has to be to be one of "the best."

Why is it that only so many CAN succeed? That's pure bullshit, anyone CAN succeed, but only so many WILL succeed. America put a half black bastard child that never held a job into the whitehouse, yes, anyone CAN succeed if they have the fortitude to work hard.

Only so many WILL be successful because you will have a percentage that is either too useless, or lack motivation to succeed, but anyone who wants too, really wants too, will succeed.

Attain a skill that is, and will be in demand, and get really good at it. You will never be out of work if you master a required skill. Provided of course you are not an asshole to work with.

Do they?

I doubt it.

the Trolls like to say they do, but the trolls on this board aren't consrvatives.

they're fucking idiots.

Horse shit... you ignorant motherfucker... 2.1 TRILLION dollars taken in, or about 15% of our GDP

We take in a HUGE amount.. more than we SHOULD need if we stick to the constitutional charges of the federal government...

Why is it that only so many CAN succeed? That's pure bullshit, anyone CAN succeed, but only so many WILL succeed.

Same thing. There are only so many "slots" for success, no matter what your path to success may be: only so many good jobs, only so much demand for products that you can satisfy by starting a business, etc.

Only so many WILL be successful because you will have a percentage that is either too useless, or lack motivation to succeed, but anyone who wants too, really wants too, will succeed.

Those are pretty vague terms, there. "Wants to, really wants to" -- how about: wants to MORE, and has BETTER abilities than, the competition. Which, of course, means the competition WON'T succeed.

Attain a skill that is, and will be in demand, and get really good at it. You will never be out of work if you master a required skill. Provided of course you are not an asshole to work with.

But that's only true if YOU do it, and most other people DON'T. A skill in demand gives you a competitive advantage. But if everyone else does the same thing, your competitive advantage is gone.

What we need are more slots for success, more opportunities for people to enter the middle class, so that more people can and will do it. But in order to do that, we must limit the ability of the very rich to become richer. Those two goals are incompatible.

They dont detest the wealthy. They love the wealthy.

They just hate the little peons who think they can work themselves out of poverty and become wealthy to challenge their power base.

IOW, it's the excessive regulation, taxation, bureaucracy and red tape that pushes the marginal businesses (i.e. the little guy) out of business.

Now, who is it that always is in favor of expanding bureaucracy, taxation and regulation, all ostensibly designed to protect that sainted "little guy", huh?

Oh? You figure 3 trillion dollars is no big deal, do you? Do you have any concept of how much ONE trillion actually IS, let alone THREE?

A lack of revenue is the other chief reason why the deficit is so high. Tax rates for the wealthy are at their lowest point EVER.

I certainly don't. I'd just like them to pay their fair share in taxes.

I hope before I die someone form the left here
will explain just exactly what that term means.
Pay their fair share....
Aren't they paying it now?
Aren't they filing tax returns and doing so
according to the Tax code.
Are you upset that they aren't taxed 100% of their wealth.

I really wish just one left brain person on here would
stand up just once and explain just what they mean by fair share.

Aren't you guys happy that the Bush tax cut will end.
Are you guys gonna be satisfied then?I doubt it.
How much do you want people to pay in taxes?
When is it enough ?

It's a good question, and I will answer it.

It has been an issue since the 1970's that productivity in the lower and middle class jobs have risen, but wages have remained flat. In other words, the "rich" are not earning all of the money that they make.

If those at the top of the income distribution receive far more than the value of what they create, and those at lower income levels receive less, then one way to correct this is to increase taxes at the upper end of the income distribution and use the proceeds to protect important social programs that benefit working-class households, programs that are currently threatened by budget deficits.

This would help to rectify the maldistribution of income that is preventing workers from realizing their share of the gains from economic growth.

And, no, I have nothing agains the wealthy. They deseve to be well paid for what they do, but not nearly to this extent.

So what is the fair share? I believe this answer can be solved mathematically based upon the information above. Unfortunately, I do not have the degree in economics to figure that out, but someone certainly could. They should start.

Oh, and I personally would not mind paying more in taxes if I knew it was going to benefit the country as a whole.
