During the Democratic primaries in 2008, rumors began circulating that Barack Obama was not a U.S. citizen by birth, thus making him ineligible to become president. The rumor began with emails sent out by supporters of Hillary Rodham Clinton, a competing Democratic candidate, but soon became a cause celebre for the American Right. In spite of the release of Obama's birth certificate, the rumor sparked the "birther" movement, which was dedicated to proving that Barack Obama was not born in the U.S. The movement regained momentum during the 2012 presidential elections.

The rumor positions Obama as the villain, a foreigner who is trying to become the President of the U.S. even though he is ineligible. He is seen as deceiving the American public, who are the victims. The rumor perpetuates the narrative of suspicious foreigners.

Narrative Landscape
The rumor that Obama was not born in the U.S. plays on American views on race. Non-white Americans are often seen as foreigners in the U.S. The common view holds that the "normal" American is white, and indeed, white Americans are usually referred to as "American," while Americans of non-European descent typically have their ethnic background appended as a hyphenated prefix, as in Asian-American, for example. Being a white American also implies a higher state of racial purity, somehow, as can be seen by Barack Obama being called black despite having a white mother, but by application of the "one-drop rule." People of color are thus more likely to be seen as foreigners. Similar accusations regarding place of birth were made against John McCain, who was born in the Panama Canal Zone, in 2008 and in years previous, but they never reached the level of those directed at Barack Obama.

A fear of foreigners is at play in this rumor as well. Foreigners are viewed as a major reason for the problem of unemployment in the U.S., as they are believed to take away positions from American citizens. Illegal immigrants are especially hated by many, since they are taking positions and money away from legitimate workers. By associating Obama with foreigners, the rumor casts a negative light beyond political eligibility.

2008 was an election year with no incumbent eligible to participate. Furthermore, it was an especially heated election, as the Republican administration of the previous eight years was unpopular and divisive, and a power shift seemed imminent. This was one factor that increased the competition within the Democratic party, especially between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama during the primaries. The race between Clinton and Obama was close and became heated as the Democratic National Convention approached. For most of the campaign, Clinton was slightly ahead, but she began to lose her hold in the final stages. Clinton's supporters were desperate and looked for ways to regain control. However, on 5 July 2008, Clinton conceded defeat.

It took the crazy right wing to turn one dumb question into an entire industry. Imagine what they could do if they concentrated on something rational. Blaming Hillary for the extremes they have taken this to is like blaming the present DNC for behavior of those who started the KKK.
Yeah maybe Hillary could answer a question.

The left-wing anchor, who is now perched at a place called Yahoo!, introduced Cruz as a historic candidate — potentially the first American president to be born in Canada.

The look on Couric’s smug face when he correctly reminded her that it was the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2008 that birthed the anti-Obama Birther movement, is priceless.

Ah this discredited and disproven claim again.

The Birther movement was started on Conservative Blogs that I am sure you are familiar with- tracked down to its origin point.

Barackryphal The Secret Origin of the Birthers

And that rumor first appeared in the early hours of Saturday, March 1, 2008, on the conservative web forum, FreeRepublic.com. In a thread entitled “FR CONTEST: Pin the Middle Name on the Obama,” where posters were offering various 'funny' middle names for Barack Obama in lieu of “Hussein,” a poster named “FARS” posted this non-sequitur:

I was told today that Obama swore in on a Koran for his Senate seat. I do not believe he did. Can someone clarify this for me? I am under the impression only a Congressman has so far sworn in on a Koran.

Also that Obama’s mother gave birth to him overseas and then immediately flew into Hawaii and registered his birth as having taken place in Hawaii.

Again, any clarifications on this? Defintely disqualifies him for Prez. There must be some trace of an airticket. While small babies are not charged air fare they do have a ticket issued for them.

Long time ago but there may be some residual information somewhere. Good ammo (if available and true) BEST USED AFTER he becomes PREZ (if that occurs) and it’s too late for Dems - except accept the VP.

Dated March 2008.

PUMA's did not get on board for this until Summer 2008- following the conspiracy started on right wing blogs.

Yeah maybe Hillary could answer a question.
That's what the press has been saying for months, while Hillary keeps hiding out better than Sasquatch!!!

But of course the main point of this thread was to show how perky Couric just couldn't believe it!
She was so sure she had a "gotcha" on Cruz and it once again shows how terrible biased the MSM, i.e. Couric et.al. are ready to pounce. That was the point.

Syriously

Actually, it seems that everyone says Hillary and the Democrats did it...

This picture speaks volumes of Couric's surprise and disgust that Cruz brings up Hillary!
Pursed lips! Arms folded. Pissed

CRUZ: “You know it’s interesting, the whole Birther thing was started by the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2008 against Barack Obama…”

Is this your acknowledgement that the birther movement was idiotic?

Point to the line where that says Hilary and the Democrats started it? Because I am not seeing it.

Is this your acknowledgement that Hillary and her supporters are idiots?

Quick count here of posters- who thinks all Birthers are complete idiots- whether they think Cruz is not eligible- or Obama?

I think all Birthers are idiots.

Stand up and be counted.

Since there is no indication that Hillary was ever a 'Birther'- that is just an idiotic claim.

Her PUMA supporters- yeah they were idiots.

NO.... what I'm showing is the extreme biased Couric pissed because Cruz pointed out something the "journalist" didn't know or didn't care to acknowledge!
These phony ex professional "journalists" have time and again shown their Democrat support.
When 85% of media donated money to Democrats or 1,160 (85%) of the 1,353 of the Senior executives, on-air personalities, producers, reporters, editors, writers and other self-identifying employees of ABC, CBS and NBC contributed more than $1 million to Democrats candidates and campaign committees in 2008, according to an analysis by The Examiner of data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.
Obama Democrats got 88 percent of 2008 contributions by TV network execs writers reporters The Daily Caller

Quick count here how many of you believe the MSM is biased favoring Democrats in both money donations and slanting of the news they supposedly present?

Again the point of the thread was to show how perky Katie thinking as she did with Palin really had Cruz caught... again read her opening statement:
"..introduced Cruz as a historic candidate — potentially the first American president to be born in Canada"
Why was that necessary? Totally proven by Cruz a true constitutional scholar unlike Obama to be nothing more then to jab Cruz!
But it backfired and she was pissed!
