Many years ago, Congress passed, and the President signed a new tax on luxury yachts. In Rhode Island is where a lot of those boats are built and repaired. What happened? Yacht sales plummeted as the rich chose not to buy the boats and pay the increased tax, so they invested their money elsewhere. The boatyards now had nothing to build, so the workers were laid off and the boat yards closed. Thousands of craftsmen who built those boats were out a job and had no prospect for any other type of employment, so the sat at home collecting unemployment compensation. How much was raised by the taxes?
