With an Aug. 2 deadline to resolve the issue approaching, the questions are growing less hypothetical by the day. One prominent commentator, conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks, took sides Tuesday in a sharply-worded column that amounted to a tongue-lashing for the whole Republican Party.


"If the debt ceiling talks fail, independent voters will see that Democrats were willing to compromise but Republicans were not," writes Mr. Brooks, who is also a frequent TV commentator on the PBS NewsHour. "If responsible Republicans don't take control, independents will conclude that Republican fanaticism caused this default. They will conclude that Republicans are not fit to govern."

Who says they're fit to govern now in the first place?

Here is the problem with you Flaylo. You are more concerned about which party to blame and you completely ignore the fact that whether the debt limit increases or doesn't the American people are screwed.

See we, the people, are the ones that lose in this entire debate. Our politicians from both parties have abused this people. They have abused us with overtaxation. They have spent money that even our children will never see. They have tried to regulate everything in our lives. And because of their grabs for power, their poor stewardship, and a complete failure of leadership on this matter, we have to discuss whether we default now or give our politicians power to spend more money and default later.

And despite all these serious issues facing our nation. You are more focused on how you can blame the Republicans for it. Do you have no love for your country whatsoever? Or are you just going to waste your life on the government dole with the hopes that playing these games will make you somehow less responsible before your fellow man and before God for your lack of action to actually fix this country?

Everyone loses either way. Just go back and look at this current President's own past words on opposing raising Debt Limits. He was right back then. He's wrong now. Hopefully there will be real spending cuts attached but i'm not very optimistic about that. This thing is a huge Lose/Lose for Americans. When will more people wake up to that sad reality?

If the Republican Party were a normal party, it would take advantage of this amazing moment. It is being offered the deal of the century: trillions of dollars in spending cuts in exchange for a few hundred billion dollars of revenue increases.

A normal Republican Party would seize the opportunity to put a long-term limit on the growth of government. It would seize the opportunity to put the country on a sound fiscal footing. It would seize the opportunity to do these things without putting any real crimp in economic growth.

The party is not being asked to raise marginal tax rates in a way that might pervert incentives. On the contrary, Republicans are merely being asked to close loopholes and eliminate tax expenditures that are themselves distortionary.

The "Debt Limit Talks" are a bunch of bunk.

There is no real link between the negotiations on the upcoming budget and raising the debt limit. Both parties of full of shit and doing this for purely political reasons.

The debt obligations of the government have already been created and the government has to pay those obligations. It is extremely unconstitutional for them to default. It would be a severe violation of their oath of office to not raise the debt limit.

What is really going on is that the far-right Republicans are showing their constituents that they are standing for the principals that they promised during their campaigns (however idiotic they may be).

Meanwhile, the Democrats are letting them get away with it so that they have an excuse give in to the Republicans and allow them to butcher the federal budget. They know that the American people and the worlds economy will suffer from these budget cuts. - and that the Republicans will be blamed for it. So that the Democrats will win bigtime politically.

If they actually do refuse to raise the debt limit (which I sincerely doubt), the whole bunch of them should be rounded up and shot for treason. And believe me, the repurcussions for not raising the debt limit will be so severe that the American people will be mad enough to do just that.

Wow, some of you are childish!

The way to stop raising the debt limit is to make a budget today that will not exceed the governments expected revenues. That means that you will not have to raise the debt limit next year.

You cannot refuse to raise the governements debt limit when the government has already spent the money. Those debts created by previous budgets HAVE to be paid.

This isn't the choice of the government. They already owe the money and they have to pay.

If you think that the government should not raise the debt limit and therefore not pay it's obligations, then nobody should have to pay their debt obligations. Americans should universally stop paying their bills. (Please max out your credit cards first!)

But i cannot respect this President & most Democrats who were absolutely vicious in condemning & opposing raising Debt Limits in the past. What I don't get is that the GOP is posturing against raising taxes...PERIOD. Obama has the Bush tax cut in his pocket. All he needs to say is "I guarantee that the Bush tax cuts are permanently removed, thereby bringing back the Clinton era tax rates. Now lets deal from here."

Its then a matter of negotiating the spending cuts w/o discussing the "guaranteed tax increase".
