Ah yes, this is very much like one of those Undergrad Philosophy questions: "If a tree falls in a forest and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?"

What is important behind this question has nothing at all to do with either "sound" or the ability to "hear." It is an exercise in cognitive abilities (acquiring knowledge through objective experiences and senses) and comprehension (the capability for understanding). Thus you can see the application here.
