Not only is the gay community in SF populated by non native Californians, but other areas as well which attract artists, musicians and free thinkers to Berkeley, Palo Alto/Silicon Valley, and the Central and North Coast. Areas with great universities and special colleges which create world famous artists & chefs and yes, the tech leaders of the world.

Bigotry, hate and ignorance are the hallmarks of states controlled by Big Brother, and BB's power is granted by those voters who hear what they want to believe; the few and the sage question the direction of a state or the nation, they are the best and the brightest; the biddable nod their heads in agreement with the demagogues, charlatans and partisan hacks.

Why then are people LEAVING these places?....Oregon and Washington are loaded with expatriate Californians. More conservative people from the Golden State migrated to NM, AZ and TX.
But for the rapid rise in the number of Asians and Hispanics moving to NJ, that state would have LOST population. NJ has lost well over $100 billion in wealth since the beginning of the last decade.
New York has finally seen the light by offering new and expanding businesses a ten year tax exemption.
Although NY continues to struggle because of its status as a virtual "closed shop" ( Illegal by the way) state.
This is demonstrated in that the moment a new enterprise announces a new venture, the unions swoop in like vultures making the announcement about "good union work"...
The new Rivers Casino in Schenectady, is trying to keep the unions out. We'll see. The casino is a new venture. If they are forced to allow the unions in, their labor costs will skyrocket. That cost will be passed along to the consumers.

"Steel" as you have put it, has NOT left the country. There are steel plants here. They are just no longer located in the places traditionally known for steel production.
Those antiquated plants closed and are not capable of being upgraded to the present day technology used in steel production.
Furthermore, steel is not longer the needed commodity it once was. There are stronger lighter and less expensive to manufacture materials used now.
These plants ar modern, mostly automated facilities that require far fewer people to operate. Not only fewer people, but those workers MUST be much more technically trained. These plants are employing people with IT skills in programming and also engineers that are cross trained on design AND operations.
THOSE jobs ARE coming back.

Of course there are a few left. Just like we still manufacture cars in this country. But China has basically taken over this industry, along with textile manufacturing. Yes, automation has been a real job killer, and it doesn't mean it's going away.

As long as employers in this country are required to pay higher wages, payroll taxes, unemployment insurance, workman's compensation insurance, health benefits, with a whole lot of other bull shit regulations, manufacturing will continue to go overseas.

Congress is not going to approve of a 35% American corporation penalty tax on corporations that manufacture overseas, nor would they ever approve of tariff's that have never created single job in this country. They are only good for driving up the cost of the product, making foreign goods that much more attractive to American consumers, along with taking more money out of American pockets--which always create massive job loss's.
