What the oil spill tells us about Obama.

whether or not he had time to fix MMS is immaterial. he certainly should have stepped in and thrown the govt's resources at the problem long before 5 weeks went by.

when the exxon valdez disaster happened, bush1 federalized the response after 14 days.

obama fucked up.

So in this situation, Obama should have provided MORE government, MORE spending of taxpayer's money and not have to find a way to pay for it...

that's the difference in frivilous palm greasing and butt kissing and true emergency spending.. sorry you cannot tell the difference. Had he not wasted so much on butt kissing the unions we would have more to throw into this problem..

Willow, your responses on this board illicit a axiom I heard when I was young...

"Children should be seen and not heard"

So why are you still posting?

Know what the funniest irony is about this gulf oil spill?

It wouldnt even be an issue if not for the environmental k00ks who support the president AND insist on having drilling done in deep water far off the coast!!!

Environmental k00ks suck the big one...............they are right up there amongst the reasons for alot of whats wrong with our country right now!!!

If Obama had federalized the response we'd be in the same place we are now...fucked.

And all you partisan hacks would be outraged that he took over from a private company and y'all would be claiming that we were fucked because he took over.

You morons are transparent.

And you know this how?
Do you have that much confidence in Obama's abilities that you know if he had actually been active on Day One he still wouldn't have made things better?

What he actually should have done is quit with the demonizing BP from the outset and offered the resources of the Fed Gov in a united effort to either cap the well or protect the coast. He should have set up a joint committee with the Army Corps of Engineers and BP's engineers and streamlined the response.
That would have taken leadership and meant a lost opportunity to play politics. So it wasn't in the cards for Barry O.

Obviously you didn't read the OP:

HE oversaw the Mineral Management Services for 1.5 years, so if BP was operating so poorly and dangerously, HE had time to fix it.

Comon, at least learn to read before you pretend you know something.

obama fucked up.

It's simply a lie that no federal resources were deployed for the first 5 weeks.

Having MEETINGS and calling for INVESTIGATIONS and sponsoring LEGISLATION to fine BP ex post facto doesn't count as a response.

Yes, our federal government should have immediately gone in to help. Money is not an issue. "Send in the troops" and have BP foot the bill entirely.

yeah, call me crazy but i think the federal govt should step in and help during catastrophes, manmade or otherwise.

asshat

thanks for the kind words, but if obama had federalized the response, maybe we'd be five weeks closer to not being fucked.

just a thought.

Who is responsible for starting this myth? Whoever is needs a proper dope slap. They have been shallow water drilling in the Gulf for decades.

How deep is the current oil disaster, bub?

and it's a bigger lie to say that the federal response in the first five weeks was anywhere close to adequate.

Well, we will be sure in the future to require all drillers on federal property to collectively provide sufficient capital to the US government to finance a fully operational fully equipped fully staffed 24/7 standby agency that will be able on a moment's notice to provide a fully adequate response.

I'm sure Republicans and conservatives will enthusiastically pass that.

is it fun living a completely binary life?

The only way to have had a ready to go response that MIGHT have satisfied you detractors would be to do just what I said.

Cities have fire departments, right? They pay them round the clock, spend zillions on waiting for fires. They don't wait for a fire to happen and then say, hey, let's put together a fire department!!

So, you want rapid, immediately-if-not-sooner government response to an oil spill? And you're going to bitch about anything short of that? Fine...

...establish a spill-response department, pay them around the clock 24-7-365, and spend zillions waiting for a spill - only the potential spillers put up the money - unless of course you want the taxpayers to fund it.

as i asked earlier, is it fun living in a completely black or white world?

obama spent 5 weeks dithering about this. this isn't about an *instant* response, it's about a timely response to a situation in an area for which the federal govt has *full* responsibility. we'd still be hearing people on the left whine if bush1 hadn't federalized the response to the exxon valdez and left it up to exxon to fuck around for 5 weeks. it was obvious early on that BP's response was inadequate and more resources needed to be brought to bear.

i'm really sorry if this upsets you, but the plain fact of the matter is that obama's response to this has been almost identical to bush2's response to katrina. too little, too late.

deal with it.

It's not almost identical. It's worse. In the aftermath of Katrina, there was confusion regarding the jurisdictions and responsibility of city, county, state, and federal agencies. As has been pointed out, other areas affected by Katrina had effective local government that handled relief efforts quite effectively (unlike the horrific one in New Orleans).

No such confusion exists with the oil spill. The gulf waters are clearly in the Federal jurisdiction. The Obama White House's knee jerk response has been largely political and PR oriented. "Thinking", pontificating, and blaming are poor substitutes for appropriate action.

That he is not all-powerful. Some had this notion that his simply being elected would solve all the worlds problems. It hasn't. They've gotten worse.

HE oversaw the Mineral Management Services for 1.5 years, so if BP was operating so poorly and dangerously, HE had time to fix it. He didn't. He was busy shoving healthcare down our throats. That small, <$1M piece of equipment that we heard wasn't bought that could've prevented this......that they say BUSH/CHENEY allowed to go unpurchased? Um....if it was that crucial, Obama had 1.5 years to see that it was done. He didn't. He was busy bowing to dictators and shoving healthcare down our throats.

So, either Obama did or didn't allow the MMS/Oil Co. sex/alcohol parties to keep going on under his watch, or he didn't. If he did, he's at fault. If he didn't, well, look what happened.

Obama took a calculated move. He decided to play Big Daddy and sit back and tell the children (BP) to clean the mess on their own. The imagery of the "boot on the neck" is what he wanted. What he got was the imagery of a helpless Obama on a beach, picking at the sand, as it is announced over a month into the disaster that it won't be fixed until August, at the earliest.

What could've been done? Well, Bobby Jindal and many small gov'ts along the coast wanted to build large sand dunes to block the oil from coming on-shore. Their proposal was not approved by Obama for weeks. When it finally same so, Obama Admin approved ONLY 2% OF THE SAND DUNES to be built. You know, can't let a Republican governor, and God forbid a bunch of small governments and private citizens, to come up with an idea to fight this thing. That would deny him the "boot in the neck" imagery he wants.

Not to mention.........the worse this thing gets, in Obama's mind, the better chance he can use it to his advantage to pass Climate Change legislation to redistribute American wealth amongst the world. Too bad for him, that calculation is turning disasterous. This miscalculation, combined with the healthcare mugging of America, has finalized Obama's presidency to a pitiful 1 term and he will possibly not even be the Democratic nominee in 2012.
If a liberal Republican exists, his name would be Obama.

If you want to play the blame game - blame the EPA for this oil disaster. I would say that now it has come back to slap them squarely on the face!

Nope......if a radical, left-wing extremist exists, his name IS Obama.

You love to hate. Can't you give him any credit? Do you think stopping an oil spil at 5,000 is easy? Shoving healthcar down our throats? Don't you think that is KIND of important? More important than drill baby drill? C'mon. No one is perfect. The irony is that you hold him to the standard of Messiah, of perfection. Those who actually believe in him don't, and only wish him the best, and understood how hard his current position is, yet, you just love to hate. The same old shit.
