CDZ What makes a good poster?

I was watching something on tv and there was a bit on that if one wants to effectively talk to others, usually about politics, do it without the emotions. I thought about that for a minute and that really makes sense. If you can discuss any subject (Especially politics and religion) by inserting facts and discussions of observations, do it without anger and name calling.

Can posters here manage to discuss based on facts without being emotional, playing the victim and just basically losing it?

In other words can posters be the adults in the room?

For me, I don't care what anybody's position is as long as they get to it honestly. That's all I need. But rarely get.
Thanks in part to our current president, people assume that dishonesty is acceptable as long as it's for a good cause.
Just the current President, eh?
I said, "in part". All presidents lie. Some lie to hide things in their personal life such Kennedy hiding his Addison disease and Clinton hiding his affair with Lewinsky. Others, lied to protect policies such as Reagan and the Iran-Contra Affair. And still others made promises they know they couldn't never keep such as Obama telling the public they would be able to keep their doctor in Obamacare. However, Trump has to be the first president that creates his own fact, lies about trivial details, or just plain makes shit up to drive home a point. The media calls him out on it, but it's so common the public is not paying attention anymore. It use to be a big deal when a president such as Obama, Bush, or Clinton lied but not anymore.
So tell Me. What would you rather have?

A President that lies about trivial matters -- This is the greatest economy ever! -- when in fact, it isn't and it can be verified that there have been better economies? The economy IS pretty damn good. So, has this lie taken any food off your table? Obama said, "you can keep your plan if you like it" regarding healthcare. Yet, you couldn't keep your plan unless it met "Their" requirements. Requirements they did not articulate before they made the lie. Has their lie taken food off your table? Having to pay for healthcare that is more per year with a deductible so high you have to choose between paying one bill over another or going without healthcare?

Which is worse? A President that says that the people trying to enter into this country illegally are bad people, who bring crime like rape and murder with them; or a President that says that it was just a movie that caused an Ambassador and his staff to die?

Has his lie about all of the illegals being murderers stopped illegals from killing, raping or bringing disease into our country? Have Obama's lies brought comfort and solace to those who loved Stevens and his staff?

You see, you people whine about trivial lies. And lies, trivial or not, are a sign of poor character. With that, you and I are in agreement.

But if you must whine about a President who lies, then whine about the ones who weaponize government agencies against American citizens, not against those that lie about statistics.

All Presidents lie. The question is, when is the lie an actual detriment to your own bottom line? That is the one you whine about.

You're actually suggesting lying doesn't matter if it doesn't affect Numero Uno?

Pretty much agree however the almost cartoonish claims some have made here are the actual true gold (I am amazed at how many multi millionaires, captains of industry and ex Special Forces types take time out of the day to post on this message board). Honest discussions are fine but they are the dying trend; where you can sink your teeth into a topic, write 3 or 4 paragraphs, have someone read them and respond in kind. That’s pretty much gone. The comic relief is what I look for. It’s plentiful.

If we rated posts from 1 to 10 (1 being the best) this post would be around 12.

Speaking of off topic

Speaking of off topic

No candycorn, the topic is about what makes a good poster and I rated you low which is exactly on topic. This response of yours is just another reason why you are at the very low end of good posters IMO.

Flopper, I think you are right on all accounts. For me, I agree that all presidents lie because there is a reason for it. To hide something, usually. And Trump will lie about the most incidental things I just shake my head not understanding why.

But, the difference between him and most other presidents is that his biggest motivation is to make America great again, just like his slogan. It isn't building a legacy like Obama, wealth and sex as in Clinton or changing our nation to socialism as in Biden.

I still support Trump because I believe in his ideologue, not his incendiary remarks about others.
Trump lies because throughout his life, he has bent the facts to fit the narrative he tells about himself. For most people, getting something factually wrong, especially in a public setting is disconcerting and embarrassing. Trump doesn't have that gene. Facts are whatever he wants them to be. And they can change, depending on his own circumstances. He tells himself a story of his life in which he is always the hero, always the winner, and then repeats that story over and over again. He doesn't care if facts get in the way.

What is amazing is that people like you are not really concerned about the truthfulness of the president. In exit polls in the 2016 election, 60% of Trump voters said they knew Trump lied and 33% said that was not a major concern in voting for him. For Clinton voters it was much the same. Suffice to say, it is an American tragedy.

It's called tolerance, and it ain't easy. When some asshat trolls you or what you wrote, it is definitely not easy to take your time, be patient, and calmly explain why you disagree with whatever the asshat said. Boy howdy, I think we all know how difficult that is to do instead of telling him he's an idiot asshat (paraphrasing).

Sometimes I think you just gotta let the asshats do their thing and ignore their writing. It could be that there are some people on this board and others whose sole purpose is to piss somebody off just for the fun of it. Frankly, at my age I'm not going to engage somebody in conversation if their posts do not indicate an interest in civil discourse. So, I put 'em on Ignore and save myself the aggravation. Certainly there are others who will present the same view or perspective in a better way, and I can at least try to talk to them without getting into a pissing contest. So, small loss if I don't even read what some asshats say.

Back to the OP, you know what I think makes a good poster? It's somebody that writes his/her opinions in a tolerable way for anyone else to respond to, someone that I can disagree with and discuss without getting pissed off. Usually that means not characterizing the other poster or their post, it is possible to disagree with somebody without saying what they wrote is a POS. Yeah, it ain't easy but maybe it boils down to whether or not you wanna be an asshat. Your call, every time you post something.
If everyone did as you as you said, engage in conversation only if the person was interested in civil discourse this board would change radically because the worst thing you can do to a person seeking conversation is deny them what they seek. All you have to do is click on their avatar and click ignore.

Trump's lies are not just about trivial matters. He lies about just about anything that he believes will fit his narrative. What is worse is millions of people defending those lies and repeating them over and over in order to support their leader. They thus become part the lie.

This is getting at the important point. Lying can mean more than one thing. Lying about the Gulf of Tonkin or the purchase of Yellowcake are fabrications put in place to make more feasible activities which, if circumstances were stated honestly, would fail to attract public support. It's dishonest but at least there's a method to the madness, which can be explained.

On the other hand lying about where one's father was born, when the whole world already knows differently, belies an extremely dubious relationship with Reality Itself. Where that paternal birthplace really is, is of no import to wars or government actions like a Gulf of Tonkin or a WMD story is. But the fact that the speaker has so little regard for Reality should be sounding ear-piercing alarms. If one has no relationship with Reality, then all bets are literally off. It means *NOTHING* can be trusted about anything. And that's not something that can be tolerated in the most responsible job in the world.

In short, it's one thing to claim "we were attacked at the Gulf of Tonkin". It's a whole 'nother level to claim the Gulf of Tonkin is a very wonderful place in Germany.

The fact that so few post or come to this zone is really telling, how few are interested in discourse & would rather just vent there dislike. its been a good but hard lesson trying to not get sucked into the negative. failed many times. keep trying for an open mind and a better attude.

The one thing this thread has made very apparent to me is that when ultra partisans describe themselves, they try to portray themselves as some sort of rational free thinker rather than the very dogmatic people they are.

Those who are truly free thinkers disagree with each other rather than all saying the same things about the same issues.

Having a reading problem? I said, "Trump's lies are not just about trivial matters. He lies about just about anything that he believes will fit his narrative. Where Trump differs from other presidents, is when he speaks he lies, little ones, big one, some trivial, and some not.

Honesty and trust go hand in hand which is why Trump has so many problems with foreign leaders. They don't trust him. When Trump was selling real estate and developments, he had a reputation among investors and bankers that you could always trust Trump provided it's in the contract. However in politics and diplomatic negotiations there are no contracts. Agreements are based a nod, an OK, or a comment to the news media. In other words, you can't meet with a foreign leader and pledge to work with him and two days latter announcement on Twitter that he can't be trusted.

Trump's lies are not just about trivial matters. He lies about just about anything that he believes will fit his narrative. What is worse is millions of people defending those lies and repeating them over and over in order to support their leader. They thus become part the lie.

"If you repeat a lie often enough, people will believe it, and you will even come to believe it yourself."
Joseph Goebbels - Wikiquote
So you say his lies are trivial, then turn around and say that because people who voted for him disregard his trivial lies that is somehow worse than the lies told by past Presidents who's lies have actually hurt people.

Every President tells lies that fit their narrative. This isn't anything new. Yet somehow, this is wrong when he does it.

You yourself said that all Presidents lie. Which is why I phrased My response the way I did.

It is only offensive to you when a Republican does it.

Me, I hold them all responsible for their lack of character, but I don't pretend that the R's are worse than the D's, nor do I pretend the D's are worse than the R'. To do so is a serious lack of character.

I don't like Trump, but he's done alright by America so far. Either way, his lies haven't cost Me food on My table like Obama's lies have.

So you actually had less food on your table because of what a President said?

Seriously?

Before Obama care you could choose between health care and food, after Obama care you were forced to buy health care 1st, then if you had anything left over you might be able to buy a cheese burger..

Thanks president Trump for giving us a choice again.
