What is energy independence?

What does it mean to you for a country to be energy independent? Have the United States ever been energy independent?

The meaning of something doesn't actually need to be a political debate or laced with political agenda. To me, the word independence means not depending on, so energy independence for a country would mean that it is not depending on another country for energy.
