What is a Socialist Democrat, Bernie Sanders, or a Socialist Democracy. I was not really sure. I am no fan of socialism but it is very different than pure socialism. Sanders is doing a piss poor job of distinguishing how he is different than socialism.

The thread premise is an example of why Sanders would lose to Trump.

Conservatives would contrive and propagate this and similar idiotic lies believed by enough stupid, ignorant voters to get Trump re-elected.

I agree! Bermie's brand of socialism is too extreme for America - at this time. Our main goal should be to defeat Trump*. We can worry about the other stuff later. The wheels of social change turn slowly.

IMHO, a social democrat is committed to policies that try to curb inequality, poverty, and the oppression of underprivileged groups, including support for universally-accessible public services like education, health care, workers' compensation, child care and care for the elderly. They want to extend democratic decision-making beyond politics into the economic sphere in the form of co-determination for employees and other economic stakeholders, within a democratically elected gov't.

In contrast, democratic socialists see capitalism as being inherently incompatible with the democratic values of freedom, equality, and solidarity and they believe that the problems inherent to capitalism can only be solved by superseding private ownership with some form of social ownership that usually ends up in a totalitarian state. The democratic socialists believe that reforms aimed at addressing the economic contradictions of capitalism will only cause more problems to emerge elsewhere in the economy, so therefore capitalism can never be sufficiently "humanized" and must ultimately be replaced by socialism.

In my opinion, Democrat socialists use their platforms of trying to rid inequality, oppression, etc. as pawns to secure power. That’s it.

For all of Bernie’s demonization of the wealthy, he has no problem himself getting rich off the backs of taxpayers.

Social democracy and democratic socialism are different things.

Democratic socialism is far left ideology comparable to national socialism in its results.

Correct, and a socialist Democracy includes an economy with capitalism as its basis.

Great, you get to keep half the income that you use to make....and you get to spend it too.

Nice try, but this will be too complicated for some. Even something like "an increased social safety net within a capitalist structure" will be too much.

Unfortunately, having a party who may be running a guy who honeymooned in Russian and says that Castro wasn't that bad a feller doesn't help.

The Left has done a lousy brand of naming this.
