What Geology Has to Say About Building a 1,000-Mile Border Wall

While I'll probably read the article anyway...the Border Patrol has stated they prefer a border barrier that they can see through...so I suspect the border wall will not be a solid concrete barrier.

a border fence?
A border fence is far more practical than a wall in most places. The existing fencing near San Diego has reduced illegal crossing by 60% and is a fraction of the cost of a solid metal or concert wall. The best border security is a combination of virtual fencing using various technologies and barriers geared to the topology and geology of the region, electronic monitoring, and sufficient personnel to arrest perpetrators. Building a southern border wall may sound good in political speeches but it's certainly not the best choice in regard to cost and security.

The difference between a border wall and a fence is the time to cross it. Both can be crossed, it just takes different equipment and 5 or 10 minutes longer to get over a wall.

What most people seem to ignore is that building a wall will not stop illegal immigration. 40% of our illegals will still be entering the US by planes.

As we build larger barriers at the southern border, migrants will use alternatives methods of entering the US. The most obvious is by boat. As the number of crossing near San Diego decreased due to fencing, the number coming in by boat increased.

Although flying from Mexico to Canada adds hundreds of dollars, the cost and ease of getting a Canadian visa and crossing the northern border which is over twice the length of the southern boarder and is far easier and safer to cross.

A market friendly visa would be more effective and generate revenue. Capitalism versus socialism; guess which one, the fantastical right wing wants more.

The great wall of china was tremendously effective. So was Hadrian's wall (ancient Rome).

As have been walls around every great city...walls kept the muslims out of France when they first tried to invade Europe. The invasion then was ultimately unsuccessful, arguably because of the walls.

The Berlin wall was a monument to effective border protection. It kept people out on one side, and in on the other.

Spain and Morocco have a wall between them....why no caterwauling?

I see, Spain and Morocco have a wall between them? LOL Kosher, you are even stupider today than usual. LOL

Apparently you're too dumb to realize Spain has land in Africa that borders with Morocco.

Apples and Oranges; false analogies is all the right wing has.

The Melilla border fence forms part of the Morocco–Spain border in the area of Melilla. Constructed by Spain, its stated purpose is to stop illegal immigration and smuggling. Morocco has objected to the construction of the barrier since it does not recognise Spanish sovereignty in Melilla.

False analogies by false capitalists; coincidence or (pander pledge) conspiracy?

It's not an analogy at all, moron, it's a fact. Morocco not recognizing it doesn't change the fact it's there and used to prevent illegal immigration.

This is why, nobody takes the right wing seriously. A false analogy, is all you have.

If you're tired of reading political, sociological, and financial rhetoric about the Southern Boarder Wall, take a look at this article from the Smithsonian. I won't try to summarize it because it's too long and well written. It explains the process and problems building an 18 inch wide, 20 to 50 foot high rock/concrete wall a 1000 miles long on sand, loose dirt above bedrock 100 to 1000 feet below the surface.

What Geology Has to Say About Building a 1,000-Mile Border Wall | Science | Smithsonian

Wow. I wonder how the ancients were able to build this thing then. According to the Smithsonian this is an impossibility. I don't know which is worse, the idiot who wrote the article, or the people who believe it.....

Just because the Chinese built the Great Wall of China in 5 years on a small budget doesn't mean we can do that in the 21st century. :uhoh3:

Another stinky fact from the ass of Weatherman. LOL

Great Wall of China - Facts & Summary - HISTORY.com

Perhaps the most recognizable symbol of China and its long and vivid history, the Great Wall of China actually consists of numerous walls and fortifications, many running parallel to each other. Originally conceived by Emperor Qin Shi Huang (c. 259-210 B.C.) in the third century B.C. as a means of preventing incursions from barbarian nomads into the Chinese Empire, the wall is one of the most extensive construction projects ever completed. The best-known and best-preserved section of the Great Wall was built in the 14th through 17th centuries A.D., during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Though the Great Wall never effectively prevented invaders from entering China, it came to function more as a psychological barrier between Chinese civilization and the world, and remains a powerful symbol of the country’s enduring strength.

Though the beginning of the Great Wall of China can be traced to the third century B.C
., many of the fortifications included in the wall date from hundreds of years earlier, when China was divided into a number of individual kingdoms during the so-called Warring States Period. Around 220 B.C., Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China, ordered that earlier fortifications between states be removed and a number of existing walls along the northern border be joined into a single system that would extend for more than 10,000 li (a li is about one-third of a mile) and protect China against attacks from the north.

So, the totality of the wall was built over a period of 2000 years. What a silly ass liar you are, Weatherman.
