Were the Sons of Liberty Violators of Liberties? Did they go after people and intimidate them or worse, into going along or shutting up?
Interesting question.
There weren't a massive army of them and their 'leaders' (from what I've read of them) weren't big hulls of men.....not very intimidating, IOW.
Persuasive? Sure
"Silver tongue devils"? Obviously
But not the bullying types one would imagine.
Disir was probably close to the truth when he called them propaganda artists
Oh, I bet you have Samuel Adams in mind -- Don't you just love patriotic myths?
Payne was the mousey , bookish linguist
:p
Paine was a reactionary doofus and Adams and others used his screed while recognizing his ideology was dangerous --- see French Revolution

Payne was part of the moderate faction known as Girondists. He was imprisoned by the Montanards.

The fledgling Country created the concept of liberty that had never been seen in the history of mankind. For the first time in human history, government would be of, by, and for the people. The first ten Amendments to the Constitution are the basis of the freedom that we see today. With freedom comes responsibility and when the people take their freedom for granted and fail to monitor the government that they created bad things can happen.

Jesus, can your myth making get anymore tiresome? The the concept of liberty that was espoused by the founding generation was an English liberty. You're conflating things and making an arse out of yourself -- yet again

I suppose it depends on how one spins it. One could say that if not for the SoL, the Revolutionary War might never have happened. It takes a spark to start a fire. Then again, perhaps the Revolutionary War would have happened... eventually. I think the SoL used basic mob mentality to push their agenda--they instigated a scene and the mob took over. They used the people as fighting pawns, which got out of control at times, but nonetheless served a purpose. Today, these actions are considered terrorist acts. To take up arms or perform vigilante acts against the government will bring the wrath of the police and military down on one's head. However, some mob actions such as Ferguson are borderline. The government, local and federal, need to maintain order but walk a tight rope so that the mob rule does not spread--how to keep a spark from igniting a fire 101... reverse the Oliver effigy--hang a man to sooth the savage beast. Ferguson did not do that, nor did NY. The same methodology is used by terrorist factions to spread their hate and tyranny reaching people across borders through the Internet. They instigate and let the weak minded idiots do the physical deed. Basically, what the SoL did was no different from centuries of war play against government or monarchical rule.
Were the Sons of Liberty Violators of Liberties? No because the people technically had no liberty.
Did they go after people and intimidate them or worse, into going along or shutting up? Don't be silly ;)
