Today, there is proper racism and bigotry based on superficial things like skin color. But blacks in the US today are every bit as American as the white bigots and racists who despise them. They all grew up under much the same condition and education. Compared to the slave times when blacks were foreigners of a vastly different culture and backstory.

Aren't the racists of today then completely different than those of the past? Today the hatred is based on superficiality. In the past it was a cultural difference and objection where skin color was incidental.

You cannot apply 21st Century mores to 19th Century thinking. That is the main flaw in the modern-day Leftist view of American history. They can only see their own viewpoint, which in many cases is not applicable to the past.

That said, racism in the West is still culturally based, and media is a large part of the quickly-returning and rapidly-growing negativity. The behavior of inner-city blacks and illegal Latino invaders screaming for career-sized salaries for monkey work is presented as "par for the course". Hollywood too paints these people as misunderstood or oppressed heroes. Pair that with an obviously racist president, and there you go.
