Terrorism and patriotism are two sides of the same coin. It is like the whole "War on Terror" rhetoric.

Do you not understand the concept of motivating people by the emotional use of language? A blindness to the motivations of your enemies means you will never defeat them. No, the "why" is just not important. There is absolutely no justification for the killing of all these innocent people, period !

You know I really get a kick out of people who say that the government brainwashes people. Of course these people who make this silly comment are far too smart to buy into such. It is quite foolish when one believes him or herself smarter than the rest, in fact it is quite comical, considering they have hold average jobs and live quite average lives as a result of their brilliance.

It really is disturbing the way American media is full of such rhetoric. There is a fair amount of spill-over into the foreign media too, and then you have the liberals at the other extreme also using ridiculous arguements.
I remember the Bali bombings. Immediately after everyone was saying "It was Al Qaeda". But there was no evidence of anything at the time. Sure there were loose connections (Islamic militant fundamentalists must stick together, after all) but it was an attack carried out "in-house" by local extremists. That first day I only saw one news source ask "Why is it assumed it was Al Qaeda and who else could it be?". Now that is actual journalism. Examining a number of different points rather than saying "Here Joe Public, we did all the thinking for you, this is what you need to know".


The "why" most definitely IS important. Without understanding an enemies motivations how can you ever hope to defeat them?
These attacks are carried out by people who hate the USA to the degree that they are willing to die to harm you. Why is that? The people leading them are not stupid. Egotistic, inhumane and savage yes, but not stupid. The "war on terror" will never end unless those fighting it learn the motivations of those behind it and work to prevent them.

Now back to the "why" issue. What you seem to be implying is that by understanding these animals we can somehow avoid future terrorist attacks, I just don't see it. So we find they don't like our policies, lifestyle, or religion; should we now change any of these ? Should we do this out of fear or just to be good neighbors ? Where does it end ?

Come on Mike, understanding their motivations does little, yet wastes many good resources.

I'm not saying you should change your lifestyle or religion. But the policies could be modified to better take into account those being affected.
If you understand people's motivations you know better how to deal with them.

Largely true. "Terrorists" also get to see the American response to anti-Americanism and see it as justifying their hatred.
Education is always a threat to power. If people are able to think for themselves they are hard to lead. Information is power as everyone in power is well-aware. However, when media is being manipulated (and rhetoric makes such great press) it is just another form of control.
Both Liberals and Conservatives know about use of media to manipulate people and do so. They just have different focuses when it comes to the nuts and bolts. And both are led by rich white men who really aren't too different.

Surely there is a sensible middle ground? But that isn't newsworthy. Not contraversial enough to warrant coverage. People want circus's. They don't want sensible and boring government.
