Voter suppression continues in Florida

Florida Early Voting:
Before HB 1355 - 14 days, 8hrs on weekdays, 8hrs. aggregate on weekends = 96 hrs.

After HB 1355 - 8 days, 6-12 hrs per day = 96 hrs.

Where's the suppression?

Vote by Mail (absentee voting), ballots begin to be mailed out 35-28 days before the election. Completed ballots must be in the elections office by 7:00pm on election night.

Election Day: Polls are open from 7:00am-7:00pm, anyone in line by 7:00pm will be allowed to vote regardless of how long it may take.

You only currently get 7 days for early voting (in person).

Frequently Asked Questions - Florida Division of Elections - Department of State

With that said, it's not that I'm against what they want to do-as long as they don't totally get rid of early voting, or mail in voting (it's just so much easier for people to do, instead of the ridiculous lines, and work, etc. that happens on a tuesday). I just don't understand why they intend to change it?

Early voting starts 10 days before the election and ends 3 days before the election, that's 8 days.

It's my job to know these things.

vote caging is illegal

This republican brags about it

Kevin Myles, president of both the Wichita and state chapters of the NAACP, took the accusation of voter suppression a step further, quoting from a Republican e-mail memo leaked in December 2007, when Kobach was chairman of the state party.

The memo quoted Kobach as saying, "To date, the Kansas GOP has identified and caged more voters in the last 11 months than the previous two years!"

the greatest votin supression scam today is done by the left. When I was serving in Iraq I got my absontee ballot three days before the election. I wonder if it made it home? Not a chance! The left bends over backwards to ensure military absontee ballots are not counted! Se why here >> http://www.militarytimes.com/static/projects/pages/081003_ep_2pp.pdf and here USATODAY.com - Troops in survey back Bush 4-to-1 over Kerry

If that were true, then liberal California wouldn't have some of the best MOVE laws in the country. We mail (or fax or email) our overseas VBM ballots out a full sixty days prior to election day. Overseas and military voters can mail or fax their ballots back.

If there is a problem, then it is with the laws of your state. Get them changed...

I don't know if you realize what a tight schedule elections are...if just ONE thing happens to hold up the ballot printing, things get dicey.

California is a piss poor example because theres no way California will ever be majority republican. Got anything else?

Speaking of MOVE...aren't you moving the goalpost just a bit? You stated that "liberals" were suppressing the military vote. California, a "liberal" state proved you wrong.

I recall Virginia, not a blue state but a pretty red one, having problems with military votes. Their federal write-in ballot required a witness' signature and address. That proved confusing for soldiers overseas because there was no box provided for a witness address.

Your statement is bogus. "Liberals" aren't trying to suppress the military vote. Gore challenged some ballots in the 2000 election and then hyperbole took over...

Oh Jack Where did all this "oh lets decuss this" go?

It went right out the window when the facts proveed your side is full of nohting but contempt for the facts and voting rights.

GO GET SOME PROOF of the voter fraud you claim warrents this crappy law.

"crappy law". There you have it folks. Our illegal immigration being ignored is also because of "crappy law" according to these idiots. They don't have to defend a "crappy law" because they are the elites who know what's best for all of us. Isn't that right, truthmatters. You're about as far from the truth as anyone can get. "crappy law" says it all.

Instead of reading the headlines, you might want to read the article and absorb it.

To wit:

Kay Curtis, a spokeswoman for the Secretary of State's Office, said the bill would not require citizenship proof from people who are already registered in Kansas and are simply changing addresses within the state.

She said newcomers who have had multiple names like Rinker could use another form of ID, such as a passport, to prove citizenship.

Kobach said that once the law passes, his office will be empowered to write regulations to implement it.

In the case of married women who have changed their name, the citizenship proof could be a marriage certificate or possibly just their driver's license, in addition to the birth certificate, he said. He added that the federal government deals with many such situations to issue passports and that the state could as well.

"The regulations will deal with these specific situations, so everybody's ballot is counted and people are treated equally" from county to county, he said.

If you can't produce a drivers license and a birth cert. then maybe you shouldn't be allowed to vote in the first place.

I wish you would show the same concern for all of the soldiers deployed over seas that got their ballot 3 days before the election disqualifying them.

You can get a state ID in lew of a DL.

Why are you on the right so ready to kill ten thousand children to save one childs life?

That is the logic you are proposing with these laws.

There is next to NONE of this type of voter fraud.

More legal voters will not get their vote counted.

That will be the end result of this type of law.

If you are a real American you would side with the laws allowing peopel to vote.

If you are instead a partisan hack who care more about your party than democracy then you will side with these laws.

Its as simple as that .

Is this law about the GOP support abortion? I thought that was a democratic thing of killing babies?

WTF are you talking about?

The goal is to only allow one vote for each voter and assure that only those who have the legal right to vote can vote.

These laws are intended to keep people from cheating.

But of course Democrats are pissed because they know that's exactly what they will do.

Understand that voter suppression in Florida is done legally – but make no mistake about it: the reason these legal changes are being implemented are to make it more difficult for low income and minority voters to vote, a segment of the voting population the GOP considers likely to ‘vote democratic.’

Heres your problem.

Not one of you have ever proved that this type of fraud occurs in the numbers you claim it does.

You keep giving us bullshit in place of real numbers.

Now go get any unbiased study that proves this type of fraud exsists in a big enough purportion to effect any election.

No not right wing hack blogs OK.

You know things like court cases where they found people actually guilty of doing it.

from the article

Historically, provisional ballots are counted at a much lower rate than regular ones, meaning many young voters won’t get heard

that's suppressing one man, one vote isn't it?

That is a good point.

You can decide to count that type of ballot or not, but you can't count them as fewer ballots. That would run contrary to the 14th amendment.

Are you implying that low income and minority voters don't have a driver's license? In the case of low income voters, how do they cash their government assistance checks without a picture ID?

Do you realise there is cold hard evidence that the republican party has used these voter purge actions to keep black voters from voting?
