The Soviets were fresh off dividing up Poland and the Baltics with their erstwhile ally Hitler and unleashing a war of conquest with Germany per the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. They had begun wars of conquest by invading Finland, Lithuiania, Latvia and Estonia and Poland.
